Lesson Plan Discussion

For my lesson, I am going to Franklin High School in Franklin to teach for Brandi Liere. She asked me to teach the subject of FFA history to her 102 class. As I made my lesson I had a lot to think about, making the lesson interesting, ensuring student success, and creating great materials that coordinate with the lesson.

Most students don’t care to learn historical events and dates, so I had a real challenge making this information interesting. As for myself, I comprehend and remember information better if I know that I will need it. I also know that if students are having a good time and kept busy, they are much more likely to remember the information and behave properly. I created a power point with events and their according dates which I will teach to and discuss with the students. I am going to ask the students to take notes to help them remember the information as they are going to need it to be successful in the game. After the lesson the students are going to play a few games to help them retain the knowledge. The students will be divided into pairs and given a set of cards; on each card a date or event is written. Students will then place the cards face down and draw two at a time. They are trying to match the event with the date to complete a pair. This is the “jeopardy” e-moment for my students; through a game students will be learning kinesthetically, visually and auditory. They will pick up and hold the cards, see them and talk about them with their partner. This game will keep students interested in the topic at hand and help them stay focused.

The main goal of teaching is to educate students and ensure their success. The students have several opportunities to learn with my lesson. They will hear and see the information via the power point presentation. Then look at the information in a different way with the card game. Following the game I will ask the students some questions to help them think about the effects of the events discussed on our organization. After the class discussion, I will hand out a quiz to students. This quiz will be a “show-what-you-know” e-moment where students are allowed to show how much they have learned from the day’s lesson.

One of the most important components of a lesson plan are the materials that will be used. Teachers are no longer expected to use an ancient book covered in dust and filled with outdated material; we have endless materials and supplies at our fingertips. We have power point presentations, the internet, field trips, hands-on activities, e-moments, and the list goes on and on. For my students, I have created a very informative, interesting power point, a hands-on game, and a quiz. I will also be using teacher led discussion to help get the students interested and involved. The power point will allow students to see the information in a clear, concise manner with no filler material. The game will let the kids see the information in a new light and the discussion will make them feel involved and intelligent. I will present the information to the students and discuss the importance of each event. I will not drone on and on with useless information and lose the students’ interest. I have lots planned to take up all of the class time, but if there is some time left after the quiz, the students can get out their cards and play the memory game again.

As an agriculture science teacher, presenting this lesson will be very beneficial to me. In any 102 class, the history of agriculture and FFA must be taught. It will be helpful to have this information already prepared. As time goes on, I can change the power point and activities as needed. All-in-all I am very prepared to teach my first lesson and look forward to connecting with and educating students. I have made the lesson interesting, provided several opportunities for student success, and given the students great materials to learn from and with.
