| Eulogy for a Goldfish You were ever trusting And always believed in me Even when I forgot To feed you for three days. You simply swam around in that Tepid, unpurified water Looking up through tiny retina Of caviar eyes Through a blurred vision At a distorted face Through layers of water and glass. Born to a plastic bag Within carboard walls of A traveling carneval. What did you have to live for? Never smelling the heaven-scent Of a freshly fallen rainstorm. Or feeling the warm, soft caress of Hot chocolate on a winter's evening. Yet as you swam by your three inch Clay castle Your eyes showed a belief That you were indeed Some type of King Or Queen. And as you slowly floated to the top Of your almost crystal bowl, I could almost hear some far off Unseen kingdom crying Through tiny caviar eyes. (This poem was based on the poems "Eulogy for a Hermit Crab" and "Justification for a Horned Lizard" by Pattiann Rogers. It was a writing assignment to "copy" another poet's style and I liked the outcome.) |
