The Shanghai Tunnels

Here are my pics of my tour of Portland's "Shanghai" Tunnels- where men were kidnapped and sold overseas for $50 a head, and women were kidnapped and sold into white slavery. Very interesting tour- lots of ghost lore.

Descending into the depths...

Shots of an opium den (the bunks were for opium addicts to use while the high wore off) said to be haunted by a prostitute named Nina. She was dropped down an elevator shaft directly outside of the den after giving information to the police as to the whereabouts of the den and the Shanghai Tunnels. Also a baby's high chair- prostitutes sold into white slavery often became mothers. Several other artifacts, including a baby buggy and rocking horse, were stolen from the tunnels.

This closet-sized room with a single chair was where women being sold into white slavery were kept- they were kept in solitary confinement to break their spirits. The red lighting throughout lends to the overall spookiness of the tour.

The window with the grille was specially designed so that men in the holding pen could not grab hold of anyone on the other side of the grille. I put my fingers through the grill- each slat is about 1/2" wide, so even if you get your fingers through you can't curl it enough to grab anything. The chairs were excavated from the rubble- there were so many! Lastly a shot of the brick- the tunnels were brick or stone, with some wooden partitioning.

Statue of an Indian which was sold to a captain. The slaver couldn't find another person to complete his shipment, so he wrapped the statue up and passed it off as a man. The statue's spirit is said to haunt the tunnels...
