Showing Rabbits
Rabbit showing is a hobby of growing interest. The first step to find out the location of the show. A good source is the magazine Domestic Rabbits put out by ARBA
Next, you need to make sure that your rabbit is one of the 45 different rabbit breeds and matches the breed standards. After finding the location the show secratory's name and number should be listed next to it. When you call this number you should ask the entry fee per rabbit, how many shows there are that day, and if you are a youth (under 18) say so. Don't be scared to say its your first show. The secratary will ask you for your nameand address, he/she will then ask for the breed of the rabbit(s) and you would start with one, say the breed name, doe or buck, ear tattoo number, and whether it is a junior(under 6 months) or a senior rabbit. Keep in mind the ears MUST  be tattooed in the LEFT ear.
The day of the show make sure your rabbit is properly placed in a cage (usually a
transport cage) with food and water (extra if it is more than a one day show). Have all your grooming supplies and any information readily available. Be there at the show site a little bit before the show starts to allow you time to set up or look around. Also, a lot of times if you need a rabbit tattooed there will be sombody there to tattoo for you. The cost is usually $1. Be sure to find the registry table where you pay and check the information to see if it is right.  Listen for the show to begin and for the breed being called to the table or tables and for the color(s) being shown. Take your rabbit to the appropriate table and place them in a stall and close the door to keep them from escaping. The judge will go down the line and when he/she gets to your rabbit be sure to tell them that it is your first show and they will explain to you what he/she is looking for and what your rabbit's faults are and how it compares to the others. If your rabbit does well in a class unless the judge tells you to take the rabbit back after judging they will usually move on to the next round, Best of Breed. If your rabbit wins BOB they will be up for BIS or Best In Show. For these and in most cases BOS (Best Opposite Sex) and BOV (Best of Variety) you will win legs (winnings). If you earn a leg then you may then show them in different shows and win it wins its third leg it becomes a Grand Champion. After it becomes a GC you may then register the rabbit with ARBA for a GC number which can them be tattooed in its RIGHT ear. Registering a rabbit costs only $4 each. Make your first show an enjoyable experiance!
