More Rome
We decided to walk home from the Vatican City. We had a map, it was all set. There were a few things we wanted to see, and LOTS of fountains. It was blisteringly hot out, and we had learned quickly that "When you're in Rome, do as the Romans do" and drink as much water from as many fountains as you possibly can.
Starting out from Vatican City (where, for the record, we bought postcards, wrote them and sent them so our friends and family could have that postmark. we bought some cute angel postcards as gifts, and I bought a pretty bracelet. Kara got pooped on by a pigeon. Yes, that was the real point of the parenthesis, pigeon poop.) we first came upon the Tiber river. We found a couple of single skulls rowing about, so I took a picture.
We searched through our Rome map for every area that had a fountain picture, and planned our route around them. It was hot. This is the first fountain we came upon, not the prettiest. We didn't drink here (I'll say why in a second) but we wet down our arms and faces and feet. There was a man showering in the fountain, and he pulled out a bottle of wine from the basin above and offered us some. I suppose it keeps the wine nice and cool... so whatever. Um, the fountain was a bit gross, rusty and such as you see here. So then, as we were sitting there resting, soaking our feet, we were witnesses of a junky fight. Seriously. We're talking shirtless shower wine dude yelling at some bag lady, strung-out skinny dude with HUGE veins screaming, them hitting each other, jabbering in what one could only assume was naughty Italian. Wow. We took off asap.
Much better, isn't it? Cute lil horses and sparkling water. Nearby is a drinking fountainy thing where you can refill your 1.5 litre water bottles to stay hydrated. Pretty. We rested here for a while, people watched and such. Very lovely, Rome. I shall go back.
Are you straddling a lion or are you just happy to see me? As I climbed down off of this guy, I stuck my head under his water stream to cool off. It was lovely.
One last fountain as a parting shot. That big shell is a fountain, if you look closely you can see the water spilling. After our day of hopping fountain-to-fountain and wandering through Rome, Kara and I were quite tired. We sought the Hard Rock Cafe, where we indulged in some purely American potato skins with all the fixins and milk shakes. Yum. Rome was awesome, a treasure around every corner, hidden statues and secrets. I loved it, man. We were sad to say goodbye.
