Santorini
After a good night's sleep, we woek up and enjoyed an incredible continental breakfast. We then rented vehicles and set about exploring the gorgeous island of Santorini. We took more pictures here than anywhere else on the entire trip, so bear with me and this LONG page! This is us going around a curve to get down the cliff... it was mighty steep- check it out below! We had an awesome time driving around seeing stuff.
THIS is Santorini. A volcanic eruption about 4000 years ago blew the entire island apart, causing a massive tidal wave and destroying the Minoan civilization on Crete. Cool. It left the island with this massive cliff, staring out at the caldera of the volcano. More on that later. The whitewashed buildings here are the capital city of Fira.
Staring straight down the cliff. That white schmear is a boat speeding away from the port.
Another shot off the cliff. The black island on the left is a new island, formed from eruptions of the volcano. The island behind that is another crescent remnant of the original island pre-explosion. Sweeet.
Another shot from the caldera overlook, with a better view of the volcano.
Jason, at the edge of the cliff. I think he was peeing-- he peed everywhere.
Yet another picture. Fira again, with grapevines in the foreground.
So-- then we got tired of driving around, and decided to DO something. We drove down to the port and hopped on this boat, which took us for a 3 hour tour of the volcano and to swim in hot springs. Sweet.
We made a stop at another port on the island to pick up some other tourists, and it looked cool.
Looking up the cliff wall towards Fira from the boat.
Then the boat came up along the island that is the volcano. Very black and volcanic. Awesome.
This shows what happens where the volcano meets the ocean. Who thinks volcano has iron in it? Show of hands, please.
I am a volcano climbing superstar!!
Jenn, Dana, Laura, me and Jason. Sweet.
Me up top of the volcano. The hike to the seriously hot part was a few kilometers, lots of it uphill like here. And it was damn hot. This black rock stuff ain't no joke. Not to mention the smoldering sulfur volcano underfoot. It was so freaking cool.
Jason climbed down to get a picture of himself in the volcano. You know its serious when Jason is going "hurry the hell up and take the picture!"
Here's the whole gang I traveled with. Jenn, Jason, Laura, Kara, me and Dana. Note that I am standing exactly the same as in the earlier picture of the group minus Kara. Crazy.
Then we were sweaty and gross. So, we left the volcano and went off to swim in a muddy hot spring.
Jason became a mud monster. There was pumice floating in the water here, and we took some to play with. We got back on the boat after trying to rinse the rustiness off of ourselves. Super cool.
After swimming, we were pretty worn out, so we hopped back in our cars and drove off in hopes of finding one of two things: a place to ride donkeys and a winery to taste wine. On the way, we passed this donkey- he was too busy carrying hay to take us for a ride, but he was cute!
Then we found a winery that was all decked out for a party. It had a magnificent view, but no wine tasting.
We then found ourselves at the North end of the island, at a cute port. Again, no wine or donkeys, just a pretty view. We passed a restaurant, and kept in mind its location for dinner, but wanted donkey rides.
Oia, the other major city on the island was up the side of the mountain from us.
Jason found a boat to sit on to ponder the location of donkey rides and a "vinery".
Dana helped by climbing up into a hole.
We drove some more til Jason needed to pee.
Yes, we were still on the same island. The side that wasn't blown up is nice and flat.
Finally, we headed back to Fira, where we decided to ride donkeys.
Kara bonded with her donkey before mounting it- always a good idea.
I, of course, was skeptical at first, while the others hopped on, and Jason slapped that ass.
This little Greek man led our donkeys straight down the cliff. No, not straight down, zig-zag down. If you want to see the path we took, look below.
See that lovely zig-zag going straight down? That's it. Crazy.
If you've ever been on a donkey going down hella steep stairs- it hurts your bum. A lot.
I got over my skepticism and started to have fun...
The arm you can't see was tossed way up in the air like I was riding a bucking bronco...
I flashed a little thigh...
All the way down, the donkeys were tied together while the little man led us. When we hit the bottom, he turned us loose to go back up- and of course, we turned it into a race. Sweet. I was in front when I took this picture, my donkey was kicking tail, but then he got tired and couldn't squeeze it out. Damn donkey.
We headed back to the lil restaurant we found for dinner and to watch the sunset over the caldera.
This happy lil dude owned the restaurant. We signed his guestbook, as had Michael Dukakis. Super.
It was a spectacular sunset.
And it slowly faded to a light pink crack of clouds.
In the boys bathroom at the restaurant was this sign: "Would you please stand closer because your Big John is not as long as you think. Thank you very much."
Awesome.
We stayed in a cute lil place called Kamari. The beach was right down the road, so the girls decided to spend the day enjoying the sun and surf. The beach was black, but not sand- instead it was covered with these smooth lil black stones. They were hotter than hell to walk on, but didn't hurt as much as other beaches.
Offshore from the beach were a ton of rocks all piled up. When we bought postcards, these big ol' rocks weren't in the pictures, so we think they added them to make a safer swimming area by breaking the waves a bit. Of course we decided to swim out and play on the rocks, taking our waterproof cameras with us.
We also decided that while playing on the rocks, we needed to do a photo shoot.
The rocks that were underwater were quite slimy- see the seaweed? Ew. We stuck mostly to the dry ones.
We played around on the rocks so long that we got all dried up- my hair was almost dry here. I decided
that with the crashing waves around the rocks that I needed to pose like the little mermaid with the
waves and all. I worked alright, I suppose... judge for yourself.
In Mytilene, Kara and I bought goggles. We knew there was stuff under the water, and it was so clear we could see a bit, but we wanted to see from underneath so the waves didn't mess things up. We took our goggles to Santorini, and spent some time swimming around looking at the ocean life. Kara found a katifish (above), and I found a karafish (see below). Very unusual sea creatures, if you ask me.
Speaking of unusual sea life-- there's an octopus.
In Santorini, Laura and I bought rafts. We spent some time relaxing on them, and
also used them as a resting point while we were goggling around.
One last Santorini picture- just marvel at how beautiful it is! Jenn at Sunset. Awesome.
