Students need to know what is expected of them in my
classroom. To ensure that we have smooth transitions throughout the day, I have
thought carefully about the routines for which I must plan.
Before establishing specific procedures or routines,
I feel it is necessary to have a discussion with my students about their
importance. During this discussion, I will be certain to talk about the
rationale behind various routines. When possible, I will invite students to
create procedures with me. This process can nurture a sense of ownership and
community in my classroom.
In establishing procedures or routines, I feel it is
important that I help the students:
| Understand
the reason for the routine.
| By
modeling the procedure.
| Practice
the routine many times.
| By
not teaching too many routines at once. I feel it would be more effective to
take a few days to get all the procedures and routines in place.
| By
knowing it will take more than one time of explaining the procedure/routine
before I expect them to know it. |
The following list contains the procedures and
routines I want to establish:
| Beginning
the day | |
| Entering
and exiting the classroom
| Labeling
papers | |
| Collecting
and distributing of papers
| Signaling
for quiet | |
| Appropriate
times for moving around the room
| Emergency
drills and how to deal with them
| Going
to the restroom | |
| Grading and homework policies | |
| Make
up work when one is absent
| |
| Asking
questions | |
| Finishing
an assignment early | |
| Dismissal |
