Study Skills - Reading
This lecture was fun and informative, and Mr. Samuel Heatwole was very interesting and energetic. He started out by telling those in attendance how to study effectively and suggested the SQ3R method which stands for: survey, question, read, recite and review. The "survey" part means that when the student gets a textbook he or she should scan it noting chapter headings, photos, helps, etc. This overview will help the student recall the information and provide a good study background. The "question" part means changing a simple heading in a chapter into a question. An example of this would be the heading, "Parts of Speech", which would change to, "What Are the Parts of Speech?" This gives the student a reason to read the chapter. The first of the 3 R's, "read", is for when one reads through the chapter, he or she should make notes, and mark or highlight information in order to answer the questions already formed.   Next, is the "recite" part of the method. This is where one makes notations in the book's margin or in one's own notes to quickly bring to mind what has been learned. He also spoke of helps to  jog the student's memory such as hooks, catchwords and catchphrases. The last R stands for "reviewing" the material. This is when the student actually answers the questions he or she formed earlier, studies regularly, re-reads, and reviews the headings and the helps that were made in the "recite" section.
Mr. Heatwole gave some other study tips such as: over learn the material that is most important to the student's field of study, study immediately prior to bed time, use study groups, and develop one's own style of studying. He also gave those in attendance handouts with strategies listed to help a student get in the frame of mind to study. Examples of these strategies are getting enough rest and exercise, having an organized place to study, recognizing their mental aptitudes toward study and how to deal with distractions.  The lecture was interactive and gave me many useful tips for the future.
