P. Buckley Moss-Museum
Nov. 6, 2005
The next time you are traveling West on Interstate 64 and come to exit 94 near Stuarts Draft and Waynesboro, VA, look to your left. There you will see a beautiful three story brick building in the distance on a hillside. That is the P. Buckley Moss Museum. If you can, it is well worth your time to stop and absorb the simple beauty of the art in and around this museum. I went there on  October 22, 2005, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It had been a few years since I had visited there, but the excitement and beauty of observing the artwork never grows old.
As guests park and walk up the brick sidewalk through the beautifully landscaped lawn, they can see the magnificent building in front of them. It was built in 1989 to bear a resemblance to houses of the 19th century era. There are benches and metal sculptures dotting the garden outside and sturdy wooden rocking chairs on the wide and breezy porch.
Once inside, visitors will see that the first and second floors are neatly decorated with the artwork of P. Buckley Moss. It begins with her early sketches and continues on to her most recent work. The lower level has reprints of her work and other items guests can purchase.
      P. Buckley Moss studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design at The Cooper Union in New York City. She is one of America's most popular and recognized living artists. Her work depicts the simple life of the Amish and Mennonites, valley landscapes, horses and geese. She is a very talented artist and definitely has her own style which is easy to spot in local establishments. Many times a year she will visit the museum to meet her guests and sign the artwork they have purchased. The P. Buckley Moss Foundation is housed next to the museum and the 18,000 members provide contributions to assist children with learning difficulties.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there and the peace and serenity of the surroundings as I meandered at leisure, taking in each work of art. The museum admission is free and open to the public Monday - Saturday from 10:00a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. I purchased two pieces of her work on this visit and look forward to returning some day. I highly recommend this experience, and I hope you can plan a visit soon. Also, please visit the museum website: www.pbuckleymoss.com.
