Voyager's History
Star Trek: Voyager first premiered in 1995. It was created
and produced by Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor. It starred:
Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway
Robert Beltran as Commander Chakotay
Robert Duncan McNeill as Lt. Tom Paris
Roxann Dawson as Lt. B'Elanna Torres
Jennifer Lien as Kes (no longer on the show)
Ethan Phillips as Neelix
Robert Picardo as The Doctor
Tim Russ as Lt. Commander Tuvok
Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine
Garrett Wang as Ensign Harry Kim
Voyager was a unique show in many different ways. First,
it starred a female Captain. This was virtually unheard of! Captain Janeway
was originally supposed to be played by another woman. The name 'Kathryn'
was originally 'Nicole'. After the other woman quit, after only one day
of filming, they hired Kate Mulgrew and changed Nicole to Kathryn.
Another first of Trek was that Voyager was lost
in the Delta Quadrant. All the other Treks were located in the Alpha Quadrant.
The U.S.S. Voyager was taken from the Alpha Quadrant to the Delta Quadrant
by a phenomenon called the Caretaker. Voyager was in the Badlands searching
for a renegade Maquis ship. The ship was lost in the Badlands following
a Cardassian chase. Then Voyager is swept away, into the Delta Quadrant.
Here they discover the Caretaker, a strange life form who is dying and
trying to find a mate. To make a long story short, Janeway was forced
to make a decision; use the Caretaker to get back to Earth and let the
Kazon destroy the Ocampa, or destroy the array, their only means of getteing
back, save the Ocampa, but loose their only way back and face a 70+ year
journey. Janeway decided to destroy the array. The Starfleet crew and the
Maquis crew were combined and Chakotay became Janeway's first officer and
B'Elanna became the Chief Engineer. Now Voyager is closer to home than
ever.
