First Day of School Script

Before Class:

Have a clearly marked sign outside the door indicating the teacher, class, and room number.
Stand at the door and introduce myself and greet each student as they enter the classroom.
Hand students an index card with a letter and a number on it indicating their predetermined assigned seat.
Set up individual trays for all of the handouts the students will receive.  Then ask them to pick up one copy of each and then find their assigned seat.
Have bell work on the board and tell the students once they have found their seat they may begin the assignment on the board.

Welcome and Introduction:

Welcome everyone to the first day of school and give a few more minutes for them to work on the bell work.
Take attendance by referring to the seating chart.
Introduce myself and share some personal information, for example, education, family, and hobbies.
Let the students know that I am very excited to begin a successful new school year.

Review Handouts:

Review handout with student information on it, explain how to fill it out correctly.
Review the classroom rules and procedures handout, tell students that one copy is for them to keep in their notebook and one is for their parents.
Review the handout for their parents, explain that this handout is for their parents to fill out and return it to me.  This form will contain parental contact information and additional information about the student the parent would like for me to know.

Review Classroom Rules and Procedures:

Review classroom rules, consequences and procedures, make sure to explain the difference between a rule and a procedure.
 Classroom Rules:
o Be respectful This classroom will be an environment where everyone can express their ideas and      opinions freely without fear of being rejected or made fun of.
o Keep your hands to yourself Physical abuse will not be tolerated, violators of this rule will be sent to the principals office immediately.
o Stay in your seat Students are to remain in their seats at all times unless they have permission to be, you are to have everything you need at your seat before class starts.
o No food or drinks in the classroom Food and drinks are not allowed to be brought in the classroom, this includes gum and candy.
 Consequences:
o First time you choose to break a rule Warning
o Second time you choose to break a rule You and I will have a conference after class is dismissed to discuss the expected behavior in this class.
o Third time you choose to break a rule You will receive a thirty minute detention.  All detentions must be served by Friday of the week it was assigned.  If you receive a detention on Friday it must be served before the end of the following week.  Detentions may be served before or after school and must be scheduled with me.
o Fourth time you choose to break a rule You will receive a thirty minute detention and a phone call to your parent/guardian.
o Fifth time you choose to break a rule You will be referred to the principals office.
Consequences carry over for the entire week, for example, if you break a rule on Monday that is your warning, if you break another rule on Wednesday then you will receive extra homework.  Everyones slate is wiped clean at the beginning of each week.
 Procedures:
o Entering the classroom Students will enter the classroom quietly, gather any materials needed for the class period, sharpen pencil if needed,  sit in their assigned seat, and begin to work on the assignment placed on the board. (rehearse procedure)
o Getting your attention This will be a fun and exciting class.  We will be doing lots of fun activities, however, there will be times when I need everyones attention.  When I need your attention I will raise my hand.  When you see my hand raised you are to stop all of your conversations, look at me and raise your hand.  When everyones hand is raised this will let me know that I have everyones attention and can give the class whatever information I need to. (rehearse procedure)
o Arriving late to class If you arrive late do not disturb the rest of the class.  Sign your name on the clipboard next to the door, and print neatly all of the information requested.  If you have a pass pin it to the wall above the clipboard. Signing someone elses name will result in an immediate referral to the office. (rehearse procedure)
o Turning in homework and assignments Homework will be turned in to your class periods tray marked homework when you enter the classroom before you sit down and begin the bell work.  Assignments that are to be turned in before you leave class should be turned in to your class periods tray marked assignments as you leave the room. (rehearse procedure)
o Exiting the classroom The bell does not dismiss class, I dismiss the class.  I will dismiss the class table by table according to which table participated and behaved the best. (rehearse procedure)

Before Students Leave:

Remind students to fill out their information sheet and have their parent/guardian fill out their forms as well.
Remind students that I am happy and excited to be their teacher and I look forward to a successful school year.
