Irish terriers are about knee height and just light enough to lift. Their tails and heads are carried high, ears are cocked - not pricked - but bent forward and over 'like an envelope'. Characteristic, too, is the wiry, broken monochrome coat that ranges in colour from light wheaten through various shades of golden brown, to a deep red tan. Where they came from is a mystery, but perhaps the most colourful story of the Irish Terrier's origins is the legend which describes its first playmates as the "Little People who dance in magic rings on moonlit nights." The legend continues, "His irresistible impulse after knowledge led him astray from his elfin friends. Lost and hungry, he was found and befriended by some humans who won his affection by their kindness. In gratitude, he swore a great oath that never would he leave his newfound friends. But would always guard and protect them, their belongings and, above all, their little ones."
