As an advertiser, you will usually be working with advertising campaign production, coordination with marketing, and research development strategies.  WIth a background in technical writing, it will not be uncommon to write advertising copy for both broadcast and print media.  If you are preparing for a career in advertising, be ready to do a lot of course work outside your major.  This tends to be a liberal arts major, and is therefore strongly influenced by both journalism and mass communication.

A lot of analysis and strategic thinking goes into the creation of advertisements, therefore you will spend a lot of time taking courses in copywriting and news writing.  Research and marketing are also a large part of advertising., and you will find yourself taking courses in advertising sales, campaign and management courses, research courses, and media ethics and laws.

Other careers you might find yourself interested in with a background in advertising would be marketing, public relations, design, and service sales.
