These are the stories I come back to time and again. They are stories that have influenced my own writing, and, to me, they represent the best there is in Roswell Fanfic.
Captivated by Darkness by Ash
For two scenes in particular: 1) the one where Liz slaps Max - I just welled up (sadly, because he so deserved it lol) and 2) Nasedo the bear at the end - it just shocked me so much, it was unforgettable! LOL In fact, the entire series, which includes > Fight the Break of Dawn, Fading into Twilightand Darkest Days is highly recommended. This was the first fanfic that enthralled me.
Gravity Always Wins - Parts 1-35 by Rosdeidre
Gravity Always Wins - Parts 32-End by Rosdeidre
I would have said How to Disappear Completely , but you know what? It's Gravity that really hooked me. The back story is so fascinating, and the image of Tess and Liz sharing a pod has stuck with me since. It also has the most fully realized original character I have ever read in fanfic, in the beloved Marco. I suggest reading HTDC first though. They are both worth the time.
Discord by cookieman1234
The most fully realized sci-fi story I have read. I loved it from beginning to end.
Time Will Tell by Ashton
I was torn between this one and Mirror Images, but I think I have to go with TWT because it is closer to my image of what Roswell was - fascinating and it has one of the best and most intriguing opening chapters I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, it is incomplete, but it is still worth the time.
The First Year by EmilyLuvsRoswell
Just a lovely little fic that tells us that the gang is all right, post-Graduation.
Home Bound by EmilyLuvsRoswell
This fic deals with some pretty heavy stuff in a believable fashion. It has the best examination of Max's time in the White Room of any fic out there, and the resolution is believable and dreamy. It is the fifth in a great series called
Homes, so Ill just link to the whole thing. It probably doesnt make sense if you havent read them all, but they are so worth it. I just had to recognize Home Bound individually though, because I so love it.
Antarian Sky by Rosdeidre
I have never been more desperate for each consecutive part of a fic in my life! Who was David???? I needed to know.
Innocent by mockingbird39
Angst, angst, angst, and I loved every minute of it. I'm just glad that I came to it late so I didn't have to wait too long for Max and Liz to see each other! LOL Sophie and Jack are also two of the most fully realized original characters out there. And, Mel, always delivers a happy ending, which is kind of the point of fanfic - at least to me. (Story starts in second post of thread.)
Reawakening by Tasyfa
This was the one fic that brought our Max back to us in a believable fashion. It is shocking in its intensity, but ultimately a triumph. This one is not for the weak of heart. There is one scene which is truly the most horrifying I have ever read in fanfic. Trust me. Youll know it when you read it.
Trick of the Light by JO
This is an excellent handling of timelines, and of Max and Liz. I just really enjoyed it, particularly as it introduced me to a new writer, who has since become one of my faves.
Hope Alone by Cookie2697
I love all of Cookies stuff, but this is by far her best fic. It is well written, original, and has a twist that literally left me gaping, but then saying "Well, duh. Of course." I love that!
A Call to Arms by Bennie
The best fic from Lizs POV I have ever read. It is completely original, and perfectly perfect. I read it all in one sitting.
Thirteen Years Ago by Reese
The only Unconventional Couple fic I will ever recommend. Lol Its a great one though. The UC pairing is Kyle/Liz, but Max and Lizs relationship and bond is treated with respect, which is why I can heartily endorse it.
Carnival of Souls by cherie
The only way to describe cheries writing is as "poetic." Some of her phrasing in this story is marvelous. It is also a great premise, wholly original, and perfectly dreamy. The sci-fi is among the best I have read, too. All in all, highly recommended.
The Pathos Trilogy by JO
This series, which includes Pathos, Chaos, and Terminus, has made me so mad, more than once. lol But it is also fascinating. I literally spent an hour in a pub in Ireland recounting the entire thing to mockingbird39, my passion for it is so great. I may sometimes hate the characters, but I love the story, and I love the original characters, Absalom in particular. And Tess here is just plain brilliance. There is nothing more amusing than a Tess who dances while Roswell (metaphorically) burns around her. Hee. Again, this is not for the weak of heart.
Revelations by EmilyLuvsRoswell
Em at the height of her storytelling powers. Theres a reason it won all those awards, folks. Do not miss this one.
The Game by Lauren21
While I know that it now embarrasses her, I love this fic. Searching for Liz Parker by Midwest Max
Just a great mystery, with a nice dreamer ending. One I recently enjoyed very much.
Wishful Thinking by StargazerUK
Another great "what-if" story. This time, what if Liz and Isabel went back in time, after Alex died, to save him? Unfortunately for them, they go further back than they intend. This is a great re-imagining of the Roswell story we know and love. It is heavily Gazer, but there is something here for Dreamers and Candies as well.
The Epiphanies Series by Carol000
Just a wonderful saga, from start to finish.
Epiphanies 1: The Ties that Bind
Normal by Angel
Since Angel is presently my favorite active Roswriter, I thought it was time to recommend some of her other fics. This one is based on the episode of Buffy where she wakes up in a mental institution. Basically, Max does the same and is told that everything he believed about being an alien is a figment of his imagination. This is a great story. It can easily be read in one sitting too, if you're not looking for a long one.
Ruins by Angel
I can't even explain why this fic is so great. Suffice it to say that it has the most kick-ass portrayal of Liz since Bennie's A Call to Arms. And that's saying a lot folks. If you're a Liz Parker fan, and a Dreamer, then this fic is for you.
Persistence of Memory by cardinalgirl
A wonderful first fic. It is set post-Grad and resolved a lot of the loose ends we would have all liked to see wrapped up by Season 3.
Epiphanies 2: The Anasazi Road
Epiphanies 3: Soul Survivor
