Kei journeys to china to train on her own for self enlightenment, and in hopes she might see her friend Ranma who was to train there as well. a miss-guided trail leads her to jusenkyo, where she falls into the spring of drowned Man. Therefore whenever she is splashed with cold water she becomes a guy. So she journeys to find Ranma after learning he had the opposite curse. Once together they can help each other change back.

Kei is mistankenly called Ken when she is first encountered in her male form. She decides to keep it that way and is in this form when she meets Ranma. They become quick friends and she helps him talk about stuff that bothers him, that nobody else will hear. plus in her male form she makes a great sparring partner for Ranma then his old man.

Kei first meets Ranma as a small girl when he and his dad travels to her small village high up in the mountians. Genma with the help of little Kei teach Ranma how to fight in the high altitude and conserve breath since it was thin up in the mountains. this increases his strength greatly and Kei and him become fast freinds. Kei wished she could journey with them but it was a journey meant for father and son, besides her parents would never let her travel outside the village. When she reached the age of ten she was a proud and strong martial artist, after the loss of her parents in an avlache she decides to trek off on the journey of a lifetime. she travels through china stopping at every training ground she remebered Genma describing to her. one place she knew and warned Genma to pass by and not go to was Juesenkyo. Crazily enought she was about to head down the right trail when Ryoga ( who she doesn't know at the time) runs into her and the trail marker. Yelling at him to watch where he was going she heads down the wrong trail by accident. It brought her upon the springs in an odd way, that she didn't reconize them on the map. Tired and cranky from that dumb boy she clumsly trips on a rock and falls into a spring. "oh no! that curesed spring of drown boy! very tragic story of a young man who drowned in spring 3000 year ago. Now whoever fall in spring water take form of young Man!!!" she looked at her reflection in the water! "ahhh im a a boy!!" he yelled! "how do i change back?" "you must find a man who has fallen into the spring of drowned girl. then you both shall be back to your old form." "don't you know where the spring is, i mean your the guide here aren't you?" ah yes but there so many spring i can't keep track of them all, only the ones unfortunate people like you fall into." "great, so have any men fallen into spring of drowned girl?" "Many man come here,a boy here turned into little black piglet, one turned into goose, a girl came here and became a cat,oh and a man and his son, was here he turn into panda and son turn into girl." whats his name?
"his name was Ranma."
