Collide-A-Scope 7/6/3 Well, first off top marks for the view. But then again most clubs dont have views so I cant say its something I (excuse the pun) look for in a club. Still, it brightens up what would otherwise be a fairly mundane venue. I have nothing against student unions Ive spent some very fine and drunken nights in them but paying 5 to get into a concrete tower block means there should be something in there worth the money.
So, was there? Well, Ive always been led to believe that Collidea-scope is an definitive indie disco in the most predictable way. Hence not visiting it for five years. However, a few good reviews recently changed all our minds and we decided to give it a try. Overall, it was fairly fun, with some good choices which the old school indie fans among us appreciated (and Blitzkrieg Bop was fairly inspired) but there was something a bit lacklustre about the DJing. As my friend DollyRocker pointed out, the DJ didnt really seem to be making an effort to work the crowd they could have stuck on a jukebox and no-one would have known the difference. Except, of course for the few clever DJ tricks, like following This Charming Man withgasp Charmless Man! What dya know?! Of course, that would be forgivable, if the blur track wasnt then followed byoasis. And the crowd groaned.
Still, the drinks are cheap and the crowd was cheerful and drunken, although there seemed to be a bit of a drunk guys- scared girls imbalance. If the venue was a bit more glamorous, it would be better (and it was far too light why do students need to SEE each other when they dance?!) Not an outstanding night out, but we stayed till the end and the four hours passed pretty cheerfully. All the same, your fivers probably better spent at After Skool.
