But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)
Viciously funny satire on heterosexual white America. Cheerleader Megan is confronted by her friends, family and boyfriend with the evidence they’ve collected of her “unnatural tendencies” i.e. the swimsuit posters in her locker. Although she’s not convinced that she’s actually a lesbian, her parents pack her off to True Directions – a camp that promises to straighten out gay rich kids. And so begins an extremely surreal comedy. The characters are all ridiculously caricatured and therein lies the genius. That and the visual treat provided by an absurd 50s style house where everything is pink – except for the boys quarters which are a masculine blue. Clea du Vall shines as Megan’s love interest and the ensemble cast is strong and work well together. It’s always difficult to review movies without giving too much plot away so just watch this! Whether you’re straight or gay, just remember to bring your sense of irony. DVD extras; Making of (q.good), trailer
