CANDYBOX AT PROPAGANDA 21/5/3

Candybox used to be the students choice of a Wednesday night in Soho, with the words baggy flares and cheap drinks appearing in every review. Then it seemed to disappear up it own backside for a while a la Trash and I for one stopped going. But hooray! Candybox is back and a fantastic time was had by all. Why? First, the venue never fails to please stylish but laid back, dark enough to dance (i.e. not a Student Union) with the crappy toilets we all loved (?) at Le Scandale (confusingly now the top floor of propaganda it hurts my head to think too much about it). Drinks are still amazingly cheap - 1 for a spirit and mixer and I dont care about beer but that was probably cheap as well. Bar queues are thankfully a bit shorter but still not great. The crowd was happy and pretty- not as stylish as Trash but when mullets are back in style I think thats a good thing. And the musicMainly feel-good indie without (on the whole) being too cheesey and this interwoven with some funky Motown cuts. The Djing was perhaps a little predictable- Teen Spirit followed by Just and there was at least one disastrous-10-seconds-of-silence moment but on the whole it was crowd pleasing. Heck, we even sang along to Ocean Colour Scene although I cant emphasise enough how very cheap the drinks were. However, no amount of alcohol could ever make me appreciate Justin Timberlake and for that I give a stern indie snob look. But on the whole, a great night out they had to make us leave at 3 and definitely a recommendation. Do you ACTUALLY have something better to do on a Wednesday night ?!
