Kate appeared at the E3 "convention" on Friday,May 12,2000. Thanks to the E3 website for the picture and short interview! :) Also, thanks to Daily Radar for the extra pictures and interview, and a contributor for the news!
Actress Kate Mulgrew has been playing Captain Kathryn Janeway for six seasons now on the TV series Star Trek Voyager. Now she is participating with most of her fellow cast members in doing the voice of her character in the upcoming Activision and Raven Software game Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. At E3 today, Ms. Mulgrew signed autographs and chatted with expo attendees at the Activision booth. Afterwards, she sat down and spoke briefly to Stomped @ E3 about her work on the game.
Stomped: Is today the first time you have seen the game in action?
Mulgrew: This is the first time, yes.
Stomped: What did you think?
Mulgrew: I think it's splendid. I think it really does great justice not only to Voyager but to Star Trek. It is exactly thematically correct.
Stomped: You are also doing the voice of your character in the game. What is it like doing the voice as opposed to playing your character on the stage?
Mulgrew: Strangely enough, it's very liberating. I don't have the camera to worry about, so there is none of that. It's very relaxing and a lot of fun.
Stomped: Is this a game that you would buy for yourself or your children?
Mulgrew: It's a game that I would strongly urge my children and all of their friends to buy.
Stomped: Is it possible that you might set this game up at the Paramount lot and play a multiplayer game with your fellow cast members?
Mulgrew :(laughs) I don't know. Possible but improbable.
Stomped: Next year is your final year on Voyager. What are your feelings about that?
Mulgrew: Its sad. There is a great poignancy to it. I've been with these people for six years, and finally, ultimately, of course, it will be seven. There is a heartbreaking quotient to it. But all good things must come to an end, and it's time.
Stomped: Some Star Trek actors have worried about being typecast into their roles after they leave the shows. What are your feelings about that?
Mulgrew: I don't worry about that. I think playing Kathryn Janeway can only enhance my career which was in place long before I had this job.
Celebrities are everywhere. Turning a corner by Activision's booth, I noticed an exceptionally long line. Certainly this wasn't just an appearance, but an event. Indeed as I shamelessly cut to the front of the pack, I saw what all the hype was about. Kate Mulgrew was patiently signing autographs, smiling for pictures and promoting Activision's Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.
Poor Kate. She seemed so nice. Chatting on and on with over-ethusiastic fans, she didn't even roll her eyes once. I wondered just how much patience she had. To her credit, she had more than I would have guessed:
Daily Radar: What's the goofiest question a Star Trek fan has ever asked you?
Kate Mulgrew: "Will you marry me?"
DR: Did you accept?
KM: Well, not would I marry him, but would I marry him and his fiance. He assumed that as "captain" I had that kind of authority. It was on a stage in a convention hall. Of course, I said no but told him that I was more than happy to give them my blessing.
DR: What's it like working with William Shatner?
KM: I've never worked with William.
DR: Isn't he on Star Trek?
KM: That was the original series. You're obviously a great big fan.
DR: Is resistance really futile?
KM: You know as well as I do that it's not futile, it's just rather annoying, isn't it?
DR: What do you say to critics who dismiss Star Trek because it was created by L. Ron Hubbard?
KM: I'd say they're probably on target.
DR: How long does it take to put on the pointy ears?
KM: About an hour if I'm in a good mood and about six if I'm not.
DR: When you were on the set of Cheers, was Kelsey Grammar hopped up on goofballs?
KM: Hopped up on what?
DR: Hopped up on goofballs. You know, wacky on the junk?
KM: What do you think?
DR: Well, Cheers had a reputation as a wild set.
KM: Well, you just didn't want to be there on Thursday night around midnight. They called it "Weiner Thursday", and I think you can surmise the rest.
DR: Do you think it's fair that Jonathan Frakes is directing major motion pictures while you gotta hock video games at a convention?
KM: (laughs) All's fair in love and war. God bless him.
DR: Do you think that Jeri Ryan's sex appeal saved Voyager from cancellation?
KM: Absolutely not. It was my sex appeal and everybody knows it.
DR: Has anyone ever asked you to pose nude for a magazine?
KM: Absolutely not. I am loved only for my intelligence.
DR: Would you do your Katherine Hepburn impression for me?
KM: Is that the last question?
DR: I guess it is.
