Email Writing

Many companies have stringent email policies that outline what you may or

may not include in inter and intra office email. This task is intended to give

you some general guidelines for composing business-appropriate emails.

                                      Part 1:

v    Review the following PowerPoint presentation on email writing. You might want to take notes as you flip through the slides.

v    After you have finished reading the presentation, complete the following exercise to test your comprehension.

v    If you missed many of the comprehension questions, you might want to read this handout for more information on email writing.

Part 2: Read the following samples of business email. Note how these emails

comply to the guidelines outlined in the presentation and handout.

Subject: New Edition of Longman's Value Priced Writing Series

Date: Mar 16, 2005 1:20pm

Dear Professor xxx,

Are you interested in examining the new edition of Longman’s value priced writing series for your course? The two book series: Writing with Confidence, 8e and Composing with Confidence, 7e by Alan Meyers are available for $25 net (price to the bookstore) each.

1. Meyers, Writing with Confidence, 8e, provides essential instruction and practice in basic writing skills at the sentence and paragraph level. The first developmental text to incorporate high-interest, connected discourse subject matter in its exercises, Writing with Confidence retains and expands on this feature. Most chapters pursue a theme throughout the exercises, the dreams and premonitions surrounding the death of Abraham Lincoln; animal facts and oddities; the gustatory achievements of Diamond Jim Brady, the world's greatest eater; the voyage of the Kon-Tiki; and so on. For more information:

2. Composing with Confidence, 7e focuses on the writing of paragraphs and essays within the composing process. Students are guided step-by-step through the composing process, but are provided with options in prewriting, discovery, outlining, and predicting. Each chapter in the unit on the rhetorical modes offers student model paragraphs and essays, as well as professional models. Each chapter in this unit includes a well-wrought paragraph assignment, an optional essay writing assignment, and at least five alternate assignments–-several of them in response to readings–-to allow for maximum instructional flexibility. For more information:

For more information or to request an examination copy of either title, please visit the link below each title or contact your local Longman representative at ([email protected]).

I hope you will consider these new texts for your writing courses.  Please let us know if you need anything for any of your other courses.

Thanks,
xxx
