Understanding Genre
The term genre refers to a type of written word. Examples of
genres include: particular types of essays, drama (plays), business letters and
even shopping lists. Observing the structure, content and language used in a
particular genre can help us improve our writing within that genre.
Visit the following links and determine the genre under which they fall.
Team
up with 3 classmates and discuss the following questions:
1.
What
is the name of the genre represented in the links above?
2.
What
do you believe to be the main purpose of this genre? Does it vary at all? If
so, how?
3.
What
do you notice about the language used in this genre? Can it be compared to
anything?
4. Are you familiar with this genre? Do you use this
genre at all?
5. Brainstorm a list of genres that you might find available
on the World Wide Web. Pull up examples to show your classmates.
