Photos of our work with the Scouts of Brikama for VSO's Small Project Fund
If you haven't yet read about the project we assessed for SPF, click here to read the background first.
In April we went to Brikama to meet the scout troop and assess their request for funding for their chair rental business.  They were extremely friendly and welcoming.  Note the new uniforms sported by  Kate and Mrs. H!
The Scouts in the Gambia mix good old Scouting tradition with local traditions (such as drumming and dancing), and the result is wonderful!  A very positive force for self-improvement here, which we were delighted to help support..
Everyone was having a great time, not performing for us, but just enjoying the fellowship and the drumming.  The troop is run by a group of volunteers who all have very fond memories of scouting, and its one of the few areas we've seen where the generations mix.
The chair rental business is run out of the house of the scout troop leader (at right).  We urged them to invest in more advertising, so that they can attract even more customers.
On June 1, we attended the Scouts of The Gambia association retreat.  Here Ben presents a check for Dalasi 10,000 to the Assistant Commisioner of Scouting in the Western Division.  Should have known we'd be on the hook to give a speech to 100 plus Scouts - oops!
Everyone wanted to be in the picture!  Here the leadership of the Western Division Scouts gather to celebrate the check handover.  They invited us to come see both the chairs and their empty land in Sanyang.  More pictures coming.
