Drabble: Emergence by Kate Lesky

* * *

There are no windows, no sunlight, nineteen floors underground. She has been working for the last forty-eight hours (give or take a few) to save the world, or something like that. She's too tired to remember now that the adrenaline has worn off -- and the world will never know the difference if she does her job right.

The elevator rises through the levels of the SGC like a bubble lifting through water, and she can feel the pressure lessen as she ascends. Finally she steps out, and squints in the light.

She hates it when the world leaves her behind.
