SUMMARY: an X-Files version of Edgar Allen Poe's "Anabel
Lee"
AUTHOR'S NOTES: I had to memorize this for English class, failed
the ensuing quiz, but remembered it months later. I am now dedicating
it to my teacher, Dr. Conway. A copy of the original is below
my version.
DISCLAIMER: The original belongs to Edgar Allen Poe (or whoever
now has the copyright), and the other version belongs to me. Mulder,
Scully, etc. belong to Carter & Co.
It was many and many a year ago,
In a basement in DC,
That an agent there lived whom you may know
By the name of Dana Scully;
And this agent she lived with no other thought
Than to prove scientific theory.
She had some files, and I had some files,
In this basement in DC,
But we loved with a love that was more than love--
I and my Dana Scully--
With love that the old men of the Consortium
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, last summer,
In a hallway in DC,
A bee came out of her shirt that night
Stinging my Dana Scully
So that the paramedics came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in Antarctica
Far from her home in DC.
The old men, not half so happy with secrets,
Went envying her and me--
Yes! -- that was the reason (as all men know
In this basement in DC)
That the bee came out of her shirt, stinging
And taking my Dana Scully.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who kept secrets from me--
Of many with secrets from me--
And neither the old men with secrets above
Nor the aliens with Purity,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Dana Scully.
UFOs never beam without bringing a dream
Of the beautiful Dana Scully--
And the stars never rise but I see the blue eyes
Of the beautiful Dana Scully:
And so all the night-tide, now I rush to the side
Of my darling, my partner, my life and my bride,
In Antarctica far from DC--
May she never be too far from me.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love--
I and my Annabel Lee--
With love that the winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
That a wind blew out of a cloud by night,
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:--
Yes! -- that was the reason (as all men know
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we--
Of many far wiser than we--
And neither the angels in heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--
For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea--
In her tomb by the side of the sea.
