"A kiss for luck and we’re on our way"
~Karen Carpenter
******************************************
Sydney Cooke stared intently at the shelves behind C.D.’s bar, not seeing a single thing. ‘I can’t believe I kissed him,’ was the thought that kept echoing through her mind. She analyzed the events in her mind, trying to see exactly what had led to that kiss; it was totally uncalled for, totally inappropriate...and totally wonderful.
The news anchor had announced that Alex and Walker’s flight was safely down, Trivette had let loose a rebel yell, and Sydney was so happy and so relieved...and there was Gage, her partner, her best friend, standing right beside her. It had seemed only natural to throw her arms around his neck, and feel his relieved laughter as a dull rumble against her cheek and his strong arms lifting her slightly off her feet. A moment later, it had seemed only natural to take his face in her hands and kiss him soundly on the lips.
‘What was I thinking?’ she scolded herself silently. But that was the whole problem...she hadn’t been thinking, she’d been feeling...thankfulness at her friends being safe, mostly, but then it had just felt so...right...to be in Gage’s embrace and to feel his lips against her own. ‘Don’t go there,’ Sydney warned herself mentally, ‘He’s your partner – you have to work together, trust one another implicitly – you cannot do this.’
One last traitorous thought flitted through her mind - ‘He said I was beautiful.’

Gage stared intently at the shelves behind C.D.’s bar, not seeing a single thing. ‘I can’t believe she kissed me,’ was the thought that kept echoing through his mind. Sure, he’d fantasized about it often enough – hell, who wouldn’t? After all, as he’d been trying to tell her, Sydney was gorgeous, smart, funny – if it wasn’t for the fact that ‘lethal’ also figured prominently on the list, he probably would have kissed her a long time ago.
He’d been a little amazed when she’d turned to him and flung herself into his arms, but it had been a very long and emotional day, and these last hours had been trying, to say the least, so he’d instantly decided to hang on and enjoy the hug for as long as it lasted. It felt good...right...to hold her in his arms and a moment later, it seemed only natural to feel her hands on his face and her soft lips pressed to his.
‘Except for the fact that you have to work together,’ an irritating little voice at the back of his head reminded him. ‘She’s your partner – you face life and death situations all the time, you need to be able to trust one another implicitly – you cannot do this.’
One last traitorous thought flitted through his mind - ‘But Walker and Alex work together.’

Jimmy Trivette plunked three bottles of beer down on the bar and had the pleasure of seeing Syd and Gage both jump guiltily. He watched with growing amusement as they glanced at one another, then quickly away. He felt a chuckle bubbling up and quickly took a swig of beer to squelch it. Jimmy smiled nostalgically around his beer bottle as he recalled a time about seven years ago, when two other friends had been acting much the same way...
