'West Wing,' 'Sopranos' After Award .c The Associated Press By DAVID BAUDER LOS ANGELES (AP) NBC's political drama ``The West Wing'' and HBO's mob series ``The Sopranos'' headed into a skirmish at the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. The two series were competing directly in six categories, including best drama series. ``The West Wing'' started with an edge: four Emmy awards it received in craft categories last month. Hours before the ceremony began for the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, another show unfolded outside the Shrine Auditorium: celebrities showing off everything from fashion to family to, in many cases, nerves. Dominic Chianese of ``The Sopranos,'' nominated for best actor in a dramatic series, said, ``I found myself sitting at home all day, trying to relax.'' Actor Peter Boyle, of ``Everybody Loves Raymond,'' held out his hands to show he wasn't nervous. ``I'm pretty calm. I think we have a good chance for best show.'' Dennis Franz of ``NYPD Blue'' said his numerous Emmy appearances have helped him take it in stride. He was more interested in showing off his new Peter Barnes suit with a tag inside that read: ``Tailored for Dennis Franz.'' Richard Schiff of ``The West Wing'' and his wife, Sheila Kelly, were celebrating more than his nomination for best supporting actor in a drama series: Two weeks ago, they had a baby girl, Ruby. ``It's a very exciting time right now and also stressful,'' Schiff said. ``We breastfed her in the car on the way over.'' ``I breastfed her,'' Kelly said. ``He watched.'' Although Emmy voters bypassed the late Nancy Marchand of ``The Sopranos,'' giving the award for best supporting actress in a drama series to Allison Janney of NBC's ``The West Wing,'' Janney took a moment to pay tribute to Marchand during her acceptance speech. ``I'm standing here for one reason: because of the sheer inspiration I've received from watching other actresses over my life, particularly in the theater,'' Janney said. ``Four of them are in this category, especially the exquisite, elegant Nancy Marchand.'' (excerpted) Emmy shows surprising side with early winners LOS ANGELES (Reuters) The usually predictable Emmy awards, television's top honors, got off to a surprising start Sunday as freshman White House drama ``The West Wing'' swept the early drama awards while comedy ``Will & Grace'' beat out better-known rivals. Megan Mullally, who plays an acerbic office assistant on NBC's ``Will & Grace,'' and Sean Hayes, who plays her gay friend, claimed honors for best supporting actress and actor in a comedy series over rivals from top-rated sitcoms like ``Friends'' and ``Everybody Loves Raymond.'' Freshman series ``The West Wing,'' another NBC show, swept early wins in categories where it was pitted against HBO rival ''The Sopranos,'' which, after losing in some top categories last year, was considered a favorite this year....
