Background:
Tanis was born on Vulcan in 2297.  As a boy, he read Federation military history.  He was particularly drawn to Terran military experience, both for its frequency and ferocity.  He read all that he could about Terran wars and conflicts prior to Earth's nuclear age.  Tales of great white-sailed ships cresting the blue planet's vast seas, of Great Captains - Gilgamesh, Sun Tzu, Alexander, Genghis, Shaka, Napoleon, Pershing, Rommel - storming across the world's continents in pre-nuclear eras fascinated him.  That a barbarian race like humanity, once seemingly bent on eventual self-destruction, could emerge to lead the way in establishing the Federation amazed him.  He saw curious linkage with his own race's dark heritage of overcoming similar savagery.

Tanis's father traveled frequently and Tanis spent much of his youth raised by his mother.  Observing in his son frailty as a result of his mother's coddling, the father enrolled him in the Vulcan system's Starfleet Academy Preparatory School.  Tanis suffered with quiet dignity through two years of academy preparation, all the while resistant to subordinating himself to authority.  During this period, he took up sports, captaining Vulcan's Parrises Squares team.  Whereas formerly Vulcan Parrises Squares teams were characterized by their emphasis on predictable passing and precision, the Vulcan team for the first time under Tanis's captaincy employed a radical, alternative power-style of play that took them all the way to the Bronze Medal in the Federation Olympics.

Tanis entered Starfleet Academy in 2343, older than most cadets, majoring in communications at the insistence of his father.  He continued to play Parrises Squares at the academy and ended his years there as the second-highest scorer in academy history.  In four years of play, he suffered three broken ribs, a separated shoulder, and a fractured elbow.  Thereafter, he continued to use Parrises Squares for exercise and as an outlet for his frustrations the rest of his life.  He later was an assistant coach of the Starfleet Academy Parrises Squares team while serving there as a history instructor.

Tanis's cadet cruise was uncommon: Assistant Communications Officer aboard a prototype time patrol ship on its test cruise.  He was the only candidate among his class of the Cadet Corps that year selected for time duty, a high honor.  The USS Galvanic's test cruise consisted of patrol operations of over one year in deep time throughout Sector 001.  The experience was seminal, enhancing Tanis's understanding of the relationships of time and history.

Tanis graduated in 2347 with sufficient academic distinction that he proceeded to Starfleet Graduate School through the Direct Graduate Entry Program, acquiring an M.A. in Interplanetary Relations, and then to Starfleet Intelligence School where he qualified in Subspace Communications Intelligence.

After assignments such as USS Centaur Communications Assistant and command of Deep Space Five's Communications Intelligence Unit, Tanis returned to Vulcan as a Starfleet Fellow at Vulcan University.  While in academic residence at Vulcan, he acquired his doctorate in Interdisciplinary Politics and History, specializing in inter-temporal perspectives.  He later was assigned to the Office of Starfleet History as an historian.  In that duty, he researched and wrote an acclaimed history of the Battle of Wolf 359.  For this achievement he received membership in the Vulcan Academy of Sciences, the personal accomplishment that pleases him most.

Otherwise, except for brief periods of leave from service for personal reasons, Tanis served aboard USS Tokyo, USS Yeager, and USS Sao Paulo.  It was during such service that he acquired his reputation for cool efficiency, quick thinking and professionalism in communications and tactical roles.  While serving as USS Yeager's Communications Officer -- as a diversion in his free time -- he completed the Starfleet Marine Command and Staff College program in Marine Aerospace/Ground Tactics via distance education and holographic-deck training.  He returned in 2375 to Starfleet Academy as a history instructor.

In his youth at Starfleet Academy Preparatory School, Tanis was exposed for the first time by classmates to the beliefs of a secret minority Vulcan sect that questions the extent to which Vulcans should strictly adhere to the cornerstone teachings of the great philosopher Surak of Vulcan's tenets of logic and pacifism, the foundation of Vulcan society.  In contrast to Surak who died rather than meet aggression with aggression, Tanis through his study of history has come to accept the logic of applied force as a continuation of politics by other means (very much a Terran concept).  While he avoids the use of force except where absolutely necessary, such as in self-defense, Tanis is capable of killing efficiently when he finds it logical to do so.

Because he is not always mindful of Surak's ways, Tanis sometimes displays hints of feelings when he is not mindful of self-control.  He can be passionate and adoring (particularly of his mother) as well as vengeful and ruthless.  He does not advertise publicly his doubts about the continued relevance of the teachings of Surak; his philosophical conflict is a private, internal one and his life is a journey toward a new Vulcan philosophy.  As he explains to confidantes: "When I figure it all out, I'll let you know."

Personality Profile:
Tanis is introspective and analytical.  He is comfortable with all Federation races and adjusts to different command styles essentially because he is without ambitions of power and rank for himself.  He functions best when left alone to do a job as he sees fit.  As a result of extensive time spent in higher education and other professional pursuits (Office of Starfleet History, Starfleet Academy History Department) and two periods of personal leave from service - to cope privately with the personal stresses of Pon Farr (especially intense in the men of his lineage) - Tanis has advanced in command rank slowly.  As he applies a Vulcan's long-term perspective to life, this has not bothered him.  He is equally comfortable as Starfleet officer Tanis or as Dr. Tanis.
