Ensign Blake Hunter
Name: Blake Hunter
Rank: Ensign
Position: Operations
Age: 32
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Height: 182 cm
Place of birth: Earth
Languages: Standard English, a smattering of conversational Vulcan and numerous tourist phrases from numerous worlds.
Room Assignment: 4007
Family: Little is known of his early years, as he chooses not to speak of them. He claims to have no living relatives.
Interests: Tinkering with machinery electronic and mechanical of any kind. Of particular interest to him are antique items of both human and exotic nature which are non-functional. His greatest joy comes from finding an old, broken thing of an alien culture, the original function of which is lost on him. He enjoys the challenge of repairing the item as much as finding out what its supposed to do.

Education:
Unexceptional.

Service Record: Joined Starfleet at age of 17, taking extended leave-of-absence after a 5 year term.
Returned Starfleet at 30, his earlier service and clean civil record standing him in good stead.
In the last 2 years, has served on 3 different vessels and Earth space-dock. Hunter possess a knack for identifying and fixing glitches and minor faults and he is equally capable with electronic and mechanical tools, though his quiet demeanor was often interpreted as shyness, elitism, snobbishness or eccentricity. Thus, he is ideally suited to the work he prefers: small jobs that require only one pair of hands

Decorations: Meritorious Conduct award for effecting emergency repairs on a shuttle, committed to planet-fall, which had a damaged landing strut.

Background: For the 8 years between 22 and 30, he wandered from world to world, paying whatever type of passage he could afford, working his way when he couldnt pay, usually as a techie, though on one freighter, he found himself acting as gunner when they came under attack by pirates.

Physical description: Neither tall nor short, well-built or scrawny, Hunter is most easily described as non-descript. His eyes are an average sort of hazel, his face though often looking a bit gruff is nothing special and his thinning hair is a plain brown.

Hes Everyman, blending in any group and seldom standing out in a crowd. In this respect, some of his past colleagues have, jokingly, wondered whether he can become invisible.

The truth is that he is often simply over-looked. He does, however, use this to his advantage, often being in the background in places where he shouldnt be (he likes the Bridge and often slips in, unnoticed, on some pretext, and potters around just enough to be blanked out as Some Operations chap changing a fuse or something).

Personality profile: Hunter is seen as something of a walking contradiction: He is old for one of such low rank, having left Starfleet for some years before returning on an empathic whim.

He is not a team player in the traditional sense, never considering himself as one cog among many, but rather as one of a group of like-minded individuals. (He has a pathalogical fear of Borg).
Nor is he career-minded and as such, is content with his low rank afterall, rank is no real reflection of status in Starfleets egalitarian philosophy.

This loner attitude is, mostly, due to the way that the emotional states of others frequently impinge upon his own emotional consciousness. Bars were the worst: within 10 minutes of entering one, he was a mess of conflicting emotions: anger, joy, love, lust, annoyance and the blur of intoxication. So, instead, he stays in his quarters and talks to his machines many of which talk back.

Chief Counselors Notes: A friendly, cooperative man. Warm and approachable, eager to comply with orders and requests. An asset to any ship.

Post script: In the hours since Hunter has left, I have begun to have second thoughts about him Somethings not quite right.

Update: Have been observing Hunter for about a week. He is simply a bit quirky: basically a loner who enjoys the proximity, if not always the company, of other beings. Some might see his constant dickering with seemingly broken equipment as bordering obsessive, though this would be, I feel, due to the archaic nature of the hobby, as it does not comprise his entire life: he is happy to leave off with a project if interrupted by friends, of which he has a few close ones and numerous acquaintances, with whom he has a good repore.
I confirm my initial comments, though perhaps not quite as fervently.

Special Notes: Hunter is an Empath: rare, though not unheard of in humans, though of such low-grade that he has never sought or been offered formal training. Hes a raw talent, receiving flashes of insight with little or no control. However, unknown even to himself, he is, in a sense, able to make himself invisible by projecting waves of just ignore me type emotions which result in his being able to get by, largely unnoticed. Of course, if hes being specifically looked for, looked at or spoken to, he cant simply vanish.
