DFC Personal Combat

Because of the differences in an organized spar vs a free flowing brawl, the combat rules are broken into two major categories that of the Duel and that of Open combat.

The Duel

A duel is defined as One person Fighting another within the confines of a recognized arena or space. It is Mano-a-Mano, the fight between two individuals. What keeps it this way is the honour of the combatants and if that fails, the specifics of the rules.
Anyone joining or attempting to join a personal combat should be ignored by the combatants and ridiculed by those that may be gathered to watch. The Judge will probably do both.

Tourney/sport/practice spars

Due to the inherently dangerousness nature of sword fighting serious, maiming, and even permanent damage can occur in just a practice spar.. what the fighters needs to concern themselves with is INTENT?.if a blow is made with intent to injure or kill then the fighter WILL be penalized if the type of spar does not warrant such a blow

To be more specific, a tourney, or sport spar should not involve opponents trying to kill each other or even permanently main or injure ?.such might be the result of an incorrect defense or badly blocked Blow.

Examples? 1]- stabs you in the heart hoping to kill you where stand=VERY BAD
2]- stabs you in the heart= JUST AS BAD
3]- stabs you in the left side of the chest=YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ANYONE
4]- stabs you in the chest= THIS YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH BUT IF YOU DO IT REPEATEDLY THE INTENT BECOMES CLEAR

if you enter a tourney/sport or practice spar and it becomes in the judges opinion obvious that your intent is to kill maim or permanently injure you will loose regardless of the actual score

Canjelle/Honour Spars

Again due to the inherently dangerousness nature of sword fighting serious, maiming, permanent and even lethal damage can occur, such might be the result of an incorrect defense or badly blocked blow. What the fighters needs to concern themselves with is INTENT?.if a blow is made with intent to maim or kill then the fighter WILL be penalized if the type of spar does not warrant such a blow (see above example)

As an honour spar is more serious so also are the stakes, which includes the possibility of being seriously wounded though again the intent of the blow is what is ultimately going to count.

*Warning*
judges are not stupid, trying to disguise your intent with innocuously worded posts while targeting lethal or maiming locations will cause you to be Penalized and probably loose the spar

Death Spars

These fights WILL end with the death of one or both Fighters either from a lethal blow sustained in the fight or from a coup de grais, a blow deemed delivered after the fight has been judged. Understand now that if you enter a Death Spar someone WILL die.

Basic Combat Rules

-A spar, regardless of the type will consist of alternating posts using not more than 5 actions per post

-a spar post shall consist of any defensive actions, movement action and/or attack actions chosen by the combatant

-all combat posts shall contain at least one attack action except the final post that consists of a max of 2 defensive/movement actions

-the person challenged shall have the option of making the first attack

-both combatants shall make a weapons and stance post with the person having the initial post making his stance weapons post first

-spars may have 3, 5, 7 post as decided by the combatants

-spars shall have 1 or 3 judges as agreed upon by the combatants

-combatants shall have 10 minutes to make their post (time limits may be waived if both combatants agree)

combat progresses at different speeds at times blows may fly fast and furious, at times the combatants may jockey for position and throw only a single blow. With this in mind there is no set duration that a post should recreate, what should be used instead is common sense as a guide to make the fight realistic and flowing. A sword fight has been compared to a dance.it is neither choppy nor at all times quick

-each action is just that, an action. A combination is the joining of multiple actions, and as such should not be defined as a single action simply put, there are no combos

-the spar is judged on the relative reality of each persons post with deduction made for unrealistic action improper attacks, defenses, and movements. It is responsibility of the fighter to make his post clear and understandable Vague and confusing posts will rate a deduction

-both Back posts and Force posts will cause a deduction

a note on force posts they will earn a deduction but they should not be ignored. Treat them as you would any other attack and defend them accordingly

back posts are a bit more tricky to deal with because most often to defend against a back post You end up back posting your self.. It is suggested you deal with it by using an action that you had already posted (moving sword to attack, stepping back, etc) to minimize the attack to ineffectual status ("as I was already stepping back your stab just misses my right leg")

-going over the time limit will cause a deduction

-excessive OOC may cause a deduction, you are here to fight not chat

-all blows must be acknowledged in some way, Either defended or accepted. If your defense deals with multiple attacks this must be specified.

Actions

Attack actions include though are not limited to-
-hitting or attempting to hit with a weapon or hand/body part or foreign object

Movement actions include though are not limited to-
-moving your body or weapons in such a manner that repositions them in a manner that has bearing upon the spar

(rocking back on your heels/ blinking/wiping the sweat from your brow, looking at your opponent etc these small movement do nothing to change the spar and are not included as an action in this, as in other instances use common sense as your guide)

accepting an attack is not an action unless the acceptance causes your body to move in a manner that impacts upon the spar

(accepting a shield punch that rattles your teeth and brings tears to your eyes as it rocks you back on your heels is not a movement, though if it forces you back a step and out of range of the next blow it is then considered an action)

defensive actions include though are not limited to

-using your weapons or body to block/ parry or dodge an attack

Deductions

Time
-A deduction of 1 point is made if you do not post with in the required time limit

Extra Actions
-A deduction of 1 point is made for each action in excess of the max 5

Realism
-A deduction of 1 point is made for each unrealistic action

Unclear
-A deduction of 1 point is made for each unclear or vague action

Intent
-Forfeiture of the spar may happen if the intent of your attacks is other than spirit of the spar allows

Weapons
There is no limit on how many weapons you may carry. But rest assured if you are weighted down carrying a small armory the judge will be making deductions for unrealistic actions as per normal use common sense!

Judgements

Judges are chosen and agreed upon by both combatants in most cases this should preclude any arguments over the decisions  after all You chose them.. sometimes Mistakes are made if you believe this is the case then approach the judge politely and state your case . If he believes it is warranted, he will then correct the judgement accordingly

Open Combat

Open combat by its very nature is much less organized than That of the more formal duel?. To help simulate that open combat is broken down into 3 action posts as per normal all combat posts Must be alternating ( the weapons post is NOT a combat post)

Actions in Open combat are defined the same as in a duel

At times Open Combat may involve just 1 on 1 or it may involve multiple combatants, because of this the time for each post changes as the amount of combatants increases.

1 on 1= 6 min per post

2 on 1= 7 min per post
4 combatants (2 on 1 or 2 on 2).= 8min per post

5 or more combatants = 10 min per post

the time limit applies to everyone involved in the combat (time limits may be waived if all initial combatants agree fight starts with 2 combatants and they agree time limits waived then they are waived regardless of what others that join in may want)

weapons must be posted in such a manner that all combatants can see them (you may not post your weapons then later when your target comes into the room simply attack)

if you attack first, your post CANNOT contain Your Weapons post they MUST be separate (this is done so you may not jump someone with a combo weapons and attack post)

If You are attacked Your first post May contain Your weapons

If you join into a fight already in progress you must post your weapons separately

if someone joins into an existing OC the ones already fighting do NOT have repost thier weapons

Firing a bow is two actions- One to nock the arrow and draw the bow, the second to aim and fire

Firing a cross bow is three actions- One to draw and lock the crossbow, the second to load the bolt , the third to aim and fire.

Your posts are judged on their relative realism.

Non realistic/ improper/ or vague actions will simply fail to have any effect

to clarify~

if you attack in an unrealistic/ improper/ or vague manner the attack may do no damage or greatly reduced damage regardless if it was blocked or not

~if your defense is unrealistic/ improper/ or vague then the full power or part of the blow may hit

~if your movement is unrealistic/ improper/ or vague then it may be invalidated completely or in part

if you exceed the time limit then you loose an action this is broken down this way

{1min}0-60 seconds late --You loose your third action (it become null and void as if it never happened)

{2min}61-120 seconds late -You loose both your second and third actions (they become null and void as if it never happened)

{3min}121 ?180 seconds -You loose all your actions

{4min}181+ seconds -Your opponent can post again

*note to Judges if someone's post is SO badly written or unclear or ridiculously wordy that it FORCES their opponent to break time just trying to understand it or read it the judge should disregard the time limit for that particular post*

any blows that were not defended due to a time fault are considered to hit with full power yet staying non lethal or non knockout? You can not kill or be knocked out by timing out?you can though be seriously hurt and as a result may face later penalties as the wounds worsen

Open combat is not to exceed One Hour.it may be shortened if the opponents agree or one breaks off combat

You MUST make TWO posts in a room before you can engage in open combat this does NOT include Your Weapons post or first attack

To exit open Combat You must Make a minimum of Two exit posts.

1 opponent  -two exit posts that are defensive in nature( no attacks)

2 or more opponents-one exit post to each opponent that are defensive in nature?( no attacks)

if you make your exit posts and do not leave (You have max 10min) or attack again then combat may be reinitiated

DO NOT x out or simply close the screen/ jump to another screen You Need to have a "LEAVES" post if you are concerned that your comp may be playing silly bugger and not making the leaves Post then Log back into the room properly and check. The Onus is on the combatant to make sure his exit is seen and acknowledged

if time runs out the combatant SHALL make a final defensive if he is aware of the time, if Not then the defensive portion that responds to the last attack made shall be used and judged as part of the combat regardless of if it exceeds the time limit.
this means You MUST answer all attacks even if it is made just before time runs outs?.an unanswered final attack will be considered a time out and penalized accordingly

Judgements

All combatants involved in open combat need to agree on a judge or judges. If agreement can not be reached then each combatant shall appoint a judge and the Judges shall seek a third of THEIR choice if needed.

there are two guides to fighting and judging Open combat realism and common sense. Use both and you shall save yourself a lot of hassle.

Many thanks to Kurzon for writing the combat rules.
