Science-fiction has an intense subculture accreted onto it. They call themselves "Fans", in the original sense, fanatic; and they practice, and live "Fandom". There is a regular schedule of "Cons" held all over the world; in which they gather with others of their ilk. A lot of the appeal for them is the chance to rub elbows with those they revere or despise,
the author and illustrator superstars of the genre. Art and writing being solitary activities, these Cons allow the auteurs an opportunity to socialize with an ideal group-people who worship them (or hate them; remember the fanatic part).
This image shows Karl in good company at his first or second Con. He
had just started a series in Heavy Metal magazine, Galactic Geographic,
in which he wrote and illustrated articles about different fictitious worlds.
