SEARCH FOR TRANNY

The search for G15M-R manual tranny and parts needed to convert the auto tranny has begun even before I bought this car J.

Ford Lynx RS only comes with Automatic Transmission in Malaysia.

A used tranny from a Mazda 626 was found in the local auto part recycler.

SHIFT MECHANISM

Shift mechanism from Protégé 1 Generation was used with minor modifications.

I also installed a new leather shift boot.

LOW COST SHORT SHIFTER

It looks ugly, but it works!  Cost me not more than US$2 (for 2 bushings and welding)

I used 14mm bolt to extend it 1.5”.

DRIVESHAFTS MODIFICATIONS

The driveshafts were modified to fit the manual tranny. Luckily the tranny that I bought came with:-

  1. Joint Shaft
  2. Right Tripod Assembly
  3. Left Tripod Assembly

Modification made to install the driveshafts to the manual tranny are as follows:-

  1. Joint Shaft

*  Joint shaft from the Auto Tranny was replaced by the joint shaft from G15M-R tranny. It was a perfect fit

  1. Right Driveshaft

*  Right driveshaft from the Auto Tranny was installed to the G15M-R joint shaft. Guess what, it fits!

*  The tripod assy from the Auto tranny is a bit small compared to G15M-R’s.  I’m currently having the shaft made, and will be ready next week

  1. Left Driveshaft

*  Left Driveshaft from the Auto Tranny did not fit. Damn!

*  Had to make an Hybrid shaft to accept the stock CV joint and the G15M-R tripod assy.

*  refer to pic below

This is the CAD drawing I made for the machine shop.
