From the Perhentian Islands we stopped overnight in Kota Bahru on the Malaysian side of the border with Thailand. Next morning we took a bus to the border and wandered across the road into Thailand.

An overnight train took us up to Bangkok and a few days later a bus took us to the Poipet border crossing into Cambodia.

Entering Cambodia at Poipet is a dis-heartening first experience of the country. An absolute pit of a place where ripping off unsuspecting tourists is the main industry of the town.

But, Cambodia is our favourite country in the whole World -the history (both modern and ancient), the scenery, the myths and legends, the "transport" system, Angkor (ah..Angkor)...but above all the People.

You cannot hope to meet more genuine, friendly, helpful, trusting people. Always ready to return a smile whether young or old.

How can that be after such sad and harrowing recent times from the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot to endless civil war and a country patchworked with landmines?

Do not doubt the Killing Fields really happened. The human remains are still out there.

In the photo above they are making the wraps for spring rolls. A pancake-like mix is spread thinly over a hotplate, heated by the burning of what can only be described as sawdust.

From the hotplate they are hung up to dry on these grills before being sold to the local food vendors.
