Cruise of My Own
Subject: Social Studies
Overview:
In this lesson, the students will be grouped in teams of
four and investigate several places that they would like to travel to
on a cruise. Each student will be required to research two
countries in which he/she would like to travel. The using the internet,
student will use longitude/latitude to plot the trip as well as
measuring total distance traveled. The groups will then create a
PowerPoint presentation describing their cruise.

- identifying
and describing the characteristics, functions, and applications of
various types of maps and other geographic representations, tools, and
technologies;
- G-1A-M2
interpreting
and developing maps, globes, graphs, charts, models, and databases to
analyze spatial distributions and patterns;
- G-1A-M3
organizing
and displaying information about the location of geographic features
and places by using mental mapping skills;
Lesson Procedure:
- Teacher will review the concept
of Longitude, Latitude and Measuring Distances.
- Following the review, the
students will be broken up into groups of four. The groups will
be teacher-created.
- Each member of the group will research two counties in which he/she
wishes to visit.
- Each member of the group will
download a map and use longitude and latitude to plot his/her
trip. Once the student has plotted the trip, he/she will use http://www.indo.com/cgi-bin/dist to calculate the total distance of
the cruise. The cruise will begin and end at New Orleans.
- After the
student plots the cruise, he/she will create a PowerPoint. There
must be a slide
for every country that the group researched. The student will be
responsible for creating slide for his/her chosen country. Each slide
must
contain:
- the name and
picture of the country
- the coordinate
(longitude and Latitude) of the country
- the name of the
currency used in the country
- a major export
or resource produced by the country
- average Summer
and Winter temperature
- Each group will present their
PowerPoint slideshow.
Assessment Procedure:
Using a rubric, the student will receive a grade for
his/hers individual work, group work and presentation.
