Union Pacific SD70's   Wings Return

This page features photos of the new Union Pacific SD70's with the wing paint scheme.  I was lucky to catch several of them over the past several months.  Click here to return to Main Page

I caught UP 4000 just west of Boone, IA in mid-June of 2000.  UP 4000 was first SD70 delivered with the wings.  UP 4000 was leading three other 4000 series SD70's westbound with double-stack train.  In fact the UP posed the train for me by stopping it about 4 feet away from me.  It stopped due to track work on the Kate Shelley bridge.

UP 4001 was coupled right behind UP 4000.  The quartet of "winged units" was headed west at Boone, IA when they had to stop to allow eastbound trains to clear the Kate Shelley bridge.

UP 4002 was also in the quartet and was the only unit facing the mid morning sun.

UP 4050 stops next to the Rochelle Railfan Park.  The train was westbound and had to wait for a signal at the diamond with the BNSF.

UP 4050 comes out from underneath the coaling tower that stands silently at Nelson, IL  This is the same train in the above picture but about 50 miles west.
