Powder River Basin - Coal Trains Everywhere
All of the pictures below were taken in June of 1997 in the Powder River area of eastern Wyoming.
A pair of coal trains meet just south of Bill. WY.
A CNW Dash-9 looks alot like an Alco when it starts up with a loaded coal train at Bill, WY.  Bill is a crew change point on the UP/CNW end of the Powder River Line
This pair of BN SD70MACS have just finished a crew change and are leading their loaded coal train thru one of many S-curves on the line.  Another SD70MAC is pushing hard on the rear of the train. This location is just south of the Black Thunder Mine.
With a stiff west wind blowing coal dust is easily blown off the cars which were probably just loaded several hours ago.
As the DPU unit of a loaded coal train clears the curve the units of an empty train appear. This spot is near the entrance to the Antelope Mine. It is only a couple miles north of Bill, WY.  While we were at this spot we saw 8 train pass in less than 45 minutes.  I couldn't  even stop my Videocamera.
This shot is from the same spot as the one next to it but I'm looking left instead of right. Another of many beautiful S-curves.  Here an empty is returning to the mine
Still in the same spot empties and loads meet on this busy stretch of track.
Coal trains sit in Bill, WY awaiting crews.  Question ??  Are they coming or going.
