Read, Read and Read all Ingredients!!
Start in the ingredients, anything that ends in -ose is SUGAR. I'm sure there are more complicated explanations, but that is for sure. Also, high frutose corn syrup, corn cyrup, brown rice syrup. (I am almost sure that "syrup" means sugar too.) That's just my guideline.
Sugar Free Does Not Mean Carbohydrate Free!! The words dietetic, diabetic, or sugar free do not meat carbphydrate free. Dietetic is a general form meaning that one or more if the ingredients usally found in a product have been replaced with other ingredients. The dietetic or diabetic products may have less sucrose (table sugar), calories, salt, fat or other ingredients.
Sugar Free usually refers to sucrose free, the sucrose is usually replaced by another type of sugar that contains equal amounts of carbohydrate. 
Ingredients present in the largest amount by weight must be listed first.
Starch- cellulose is okay labeling terms not regulated by th FDA:
"Sugar free" or "sugarless" means table sugar has not been added to the product, but other forms of sugar may be used.
"Light" or "lite"- a general term that may mean that the food is low in sodium, fat, cholesterol, sugar, or calories. It can mean light in color or texture.
The grams of carbohydrates listed on the nutrients lable have been rounded up or down to a whole number and are therefore not specific enough for ketogenic calculations. For example, if a serving size has 0.9 gm of carbohydrate, the lable will read 0 gms per serving because it is less than one.

Sucralose
is a form of sugar so it has the "ose" but it has been chemically changed (with chorine) so it will not be absorded by your body the way sugar is. That is why Splenda is okay to use. The amount of chlorine used in splenda is less thanwhat is in your tap water....but it is still a chemical and some people get headaches from it.

WOW! That was a long list. Hope it males sense. My philosophy is to stay away from anything that ends in "ose" or "tol".
