All Women Dealing with PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects millions of women all over the world.  It is the leading cause of female infertility.  Many women have it and don't realize it.  It can have serious consequences if left untreated.  PCOS can cause Type II Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Endometrial Cancer.  Symptoms of PCOS include (but are not limited to): irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, male patterned baldness, acne, polycystic ovaries, obesity/weight gain, and skin tags.

Sadly, there are many doctors who know little to nothing about PCOS.  It is my goal to inform as many people as possible about this illness.  The more that people know, the more the doctors will have to learn about it.
I was diagnosed with PCOS back in January of 2002.  Chris and I had been trying for another baby since December of 2000, and weren't having any luck.  My midwife decided to order some tests, and when my results came back, she told me she was sure I had PCOS.  My hormones were all out of whack.  My glucose levels were high and I was labelled "Insulin Resistant".  My cholesterol levels were also high.  I was referred to an OB/GYN and he started me on Glucophage XR (500mg/day).  I also started taking the fertility drug called Clomid.  After 2 months, my periods came back on their own.  This was a shock since I hadn't one (unless aided by medication) in close to 2 years.  In late July, I had another round of Glucose tests done.  My OB/GYN called me to say that my levels were still high, although lower than my January levels.  He told me that he didn't feel comfortable treating me for the Insulin problem, so he referred me to a General Practitioner.  I had my first visit with him and was very pleased.  He seemed very knowledgeable and willing to tackle this problem head-on.  He ordered some other tests, and gave me a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes.  WHAT?!  This whole time I've been told I'm Insulin Resistant.  He said,"No, you're definitely Diabetic."  The words I did not want to hear.  He upped my dosage on my Glucophage and ordered me to start testing my blood sugar at home.  I have searched the internet and found quite a few sites that deal with PCOS.  I even started my own support group.  If you'd like more information, please don't hesitate to drop by the site!!!  It's open to the public, so you don't even have to join!!!  We'll definitely keep you updated on our progress!!!
