A school, teaching children in
the primary and secondary course, was founded in 1950. And thus it went
up to the school year 1957/1958 and in the year 1958 the school moved to a
nearly- build building, which sheltered the students from the secondary (high
school) level. In 1972/73 the high school included primary and secondary levels
of education. Introducing of the EPC (Education Professional Complexes) in
1983/ 84 the school lacked the 11th class. In the year 1987/88 the Maths school
in Varna transferred its Biology
and Chemistry classes to the IIIrd Comprehensive school. In the school year
1989/90 by order of the Ministry of Education the 3rd Comprehensive
school was transformed into the 3rd
High School with intensive study of Biology, Chemistry, Sciences of the Earth
as main biases being that way separated from "P. R. Slaveykov"
school.
This is the single high school in
Bulgaria, where only natural sciences are taught. That's way in 1991 the 3rd
High School was given the name of Acad. Methody Popov. At present, 47
well-qualified teachers work here. Three foreign languages – English, German
and French are taught, as well as computer studies.
The school has participated in a lot of projects
like: G.R.E.E.N., TEMPUS, Blue Danube, I*EARN, LINGUA-B – a teacher for
training in France is approved. Being a school associated to UNESCO, HSNS is a
National Coordinator for SEMEP (South-Eastern-Mediterranian-Project). Since
1993 it has been a parner to german school in Uberlingen in the “Blue Danube”
and “Monuments of War” projects.
For the last two years, our students have been
working over a local project “The Golden Sands’ Friends”. In 1997, HSNS has won
a contest “Educational Initiatives for IBM in Bulgaria”, assuring the school
computer equipment and access to the Internet.
One of our clubs “Confidence”, has its very important role in school’s life – its
work involves integration of children with bad sight, a project aimed against
violence and drugs, constant help to newcomers and “problem” students.
“Ecomission” is the ecological club,
which takes part in all the projects, concerning environment and civic
education.
The
high school offers a 5 year- course to the students who want to study there.
They sit for a competition entrance examination in Biology, Chemistry or
geography depending on their desired profile in order to be admitted at the
High School. In the Preparatory class students intensively study a foreign
language, this being a western one : English, German or French. At the end of
their first year they take serious language examination.
The education in profile "Biology" is
carried out in 4-7 lessons per week. It is considered with the
demands of the Council
of Europe about
the global problems of ecology, biotechnologies and healt education. The aspiration of the teachers in biology from the
High School for Natural Sciences is that students received
contemporary biological education
and excellent preparation for realisation in the University. Every year the school-learning students from profile
"Biology" work out papers and
they take part with
them in the traditional school
scientific - technical
conference in Biology on the following
topics: "Common Biology", "Medicine and genetics" and "Ecology"
Profile CHEMISTRY
The
course of the education of this profile aims to give detailed theoretical
knowledge to the pupils in Chemistry. The great number of practical exercises
help young chemists acquire experimental skills.
The
main purpose of the education in this profile is to develop the geographical culture of the pupils
by extended studying of different
geographical disciplines. The educational
programmes are connected with the work on various international ecological projects and also
by researches on actual social-
economic problems. The pupils work on reports, essays and papers, and take part
in seminars, discussions, Olympiads and expeditions.
