Windows Tips from the Crypt

"My Documents" After working on Windows and Unix machines I prefer Windows for nothing else but ease of use.  Unfortunately, some of the cost of ease of use is strict guidance to the "norm".  And of course, a few more crashes than hoped for.

  • Do you ever open a document and it always defaults to "My Documents"?  I am told that Win2K changes this and uses the most recently used folder to open to, but still for Win98 it's annoying.
    • From the Run prompt type > regedit
    • Within this program, under Edit->Find search for "My Documents"
    • If this occurrence is a path, you can change it to your own path that you prefer
      • eg.  "C:\My Documents" ==> "C:\Data\Personal"
    • To change the value, right click the value and modify the value
  • For Win2k, you just need to change the key:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-6361574-1123162974-1578531482-2809\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Personal

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Personal

    Of course, doing this at the system level may also work before a user profile is created, perhaps

Moving Outlook .pst Folder again this can be changed to be somewhere else. Essentially one has to move the .pst file and *then* start Outlook and say where the missing file is. For Win2k try this dir: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Dos Filename Completion For NT, change the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\CompletionChar to the value 9 (for the TAB key).
