of Daily Plans:

Pre-assessment to be completed the week
before unit. (KWL in class).

Each day allows for 75 minutes of time
through out day spent on unit.

MONDAY

Is Maize, The Gift of The Indians by Aliki with
class.
Ø
Conduct informal Q and A session about
corn in American history.
Ø
Present Time Line worksheet to provide
background information on the history of corn in

Time Line Worksheet will be first piece
of student’s research log.

TUESDAY
Ø
Present hands-on display of products
produces from corn. Discuss their impact on the nation today.
Ø
Students will keep add to a research log
as they read independently, go on virtual field trip independently or with a
partner, and research websites geared towards their interests and choice of
project.
Ø
Students will decide on choice of
project and begin research on topic focus. (Historical look at corn, farming of
corn, focus on how products are derived from corn or refining, interesting
facts about corn- both past and present, looking into corn as a natural
resource as ethanol, for some examples.) Materials and expectations will be
handed out.

Final
completion of projects due today. Large group discussion on impact
corn has on the nation today. Focus on surmising what we would be missing if we
did not have the technology to refine corn.
