Brahma-Vihara Bhavana

Meditation on the Four Brahma Vihara

 

 

Aham avero homi, abyapajjho homi,

Anigho homi, sukhi attanam pariharami,

Dukkha muccami, Yatha laddhasampattito,

Mavigacchami kammasako.

May I be free from enmity.

May I be free from distress.

May I be free from grief.

May I care for myself happily.

May I be relieved of suffering.

May I not lose what I possess.

May I bear my kamma as my own.

 

Matapitu-acariya natimitta-samuha

avera hontu, Abyapajjha hontu, anigha hontu,

sukhi attanam pariharantu dukkha muccantu,

yatha laddha sampattito, mavigacchantu kammassaka

May my mother, father, teacher, relatives

and all be free from enmity,

distress and grief.

May they take care of themselves happily.

May they be free from suffering.

May they not lose whatever they possess.

May they bear their kamma as their own.

 

Sabbe satta, sabbe pana, sabbe bhuta, sabbe puggala

sabbe attabhava pariyapanna, sabba itthiyo, sabbe purisa,

sabbe ariya, sabbe anariya, sabbe deva, sabbe manussa,

sabbe vinipatika Avera hontu, abyapajjha hontu,

anigha hontu, sukhi attanam pariharantu dukkha muccantu,

Yatha laddha sampattito, mavigacchantu kammasaka

All creatures all sentient beings,

all living beings, all individuals,

all those who have bodies,

all female kinds, all male kinds,

all nobles and those less noble,

all deities, all human beings,

all those in unhappy states,

May they be free from distress and grief.

May they take care of themselves happily.

May they be free from suffering.

May they not lose what they have acquired.

May they bear their kamma as their own.

 

Puratthimaya disaya, pacchimaya disaya, uttaraya disaya,

dakkinaya disaya. Puratthimaya anudisaya pacchimaya anudisaya,

uttaraya anudisaya, dhakkinaya anudisaya,

Hetthimaya disaya, uparimaya disaya.

In the East, In the West, In the North,

In the South, In the North-East, In the South-West,

In the North-West, In the South-East,

At the Zenith, At the Nadir.

In the entire universe, from the 

highest plane of existence to the lowest,

May all beings that are earth-bound be free

from distress, enmity, suffering and danger.

 

 

Uddam yava bhavaggaca

Adho yava avicito

Samanta cakkavalesu

Yesatta Udakecara

Abyapajja niveraca

Nidukkhaca nupaddava

In the entire universe, from the

highest plane of existence to the lowest,

May all beings that are water-bound be free

from distress, enmity, suffering and danger.
