•Glycolysis is a metabolic
pathway that converts Glucose to Pyruvate. Glycolysis means “Sweet splitting”.
•In glycolysis, the six-carbon sugar
glucose is oxidized and
split in two halves, to create two molecules of 3 carbon
compound namely pyruvate.
•Along the way, the cell extracts a
relatively small amount
of energy from glucose in the form of ATP.
•Two ATP molecules are generated for
each glucose molecule
that starts down the glycolytic path.
