I've searched all over the net and can't seem to find one step by step recipe for this mixture that is widely used in my culture....the ones that I've found are not very appealing and since this is an important part of the memorial service, and all of it must be consumed, I think that the tastier it is, the better. Also I have recently been told that every ingredient used is supposed to have an important meaning and although I am not aware of all of them, I want to make sure that everything is put in that is supposed to be. I've put together a step by step procedure that will be helpful to anyone who wants to make the perfect mixture for their loved ones. After all, this is only a part of our rememberance of them and we want to make sure we pride our rememberance with our offerings. |

2 1/2 CUPS.............................SLIVERED ALMONDS, TOASTED IN OVEN AT 350 DEGREES F. COOL AND STORE IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER OR ZIP LOCK BAG UNTIL READY TO USE.
4 CUPS..................................SESAME SEED (CHECK THEM CLOSELY, A LITTLE AT A TIME TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO BLACK PITS). PLACE IN FRYING PAN AND FRY DRY WITH NO OIL OR BUTTER UNTIL GOLDEN IN COLOR, ON MED HEAT. LIGHTLY CRUSH HALF OF THE SEEDS IN A BLENDER AND STORE IN SEPARATE CONTAINERS OR ZIP LOCK BAGS UNTIL READY TO USE.
6 CUPS..................................WHOLE WHEAT KERNELS (750g BAG = 2 CUPS) INSPECT A LITTLE AT A TIME TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO CHUCKS, DISCOLORED KERNELS OR PITS. TRY AND REMOVE VERY BROKEN PIECES AS WELL. STORE IN CONTAINER OR BAG UNTIL READY TO USE.
2 CUPS..................................CHOPPED WALNUTS (LIGHTLY CRUSHED) STORE IN AIR TIGHT CONTAINER OR ZIP LOCK BAG UNTIL READY TO USE.
4 BOXES................................FRIGANIA (THICK MELBA TOAST) BREAK INTO SMALL PIECES AND GRIND INTO FINE CRUMBS USING A BLENDER. STORE IN PLASTIC CONTAINER OR BAG UNTIL READY TO USE.
3 CUPS...................................WHITE RAISINS (SOAK IN WARM WATER FOR 45 MIN ) DRAIN IN COLANDER AND RINSE VERY WELL. SPREAD ON LINT FREE TOWEL AND INSPECT EACH ONE FOR ANY SMALL STEMS AND REMOVE. LET AIR DRY ON TOWEL, AND STORE IN CONTAINER UNTIL READY TO USE. (CHANGING TOWELS WILL HELP THEM DRY QUICKER)
1 CUP....................................FRESH PARSLEY ( FINELY CHOPPED) SHOULD NOT BE STORED FOR MORE THAN 2 DAYS OR IT MAY WILT. REFRIDGERATE IN PLASTIC BAG UNTIL READY TO USE.
1 WHOLE POMEGRANATE ( CLEAN JUST BEFORE READY TO ADD TO FINAL MIXTURE AND ADD ONLY SEEDS TO MIXTURE).
3/4 CUP.................................GROUND CINNAMON. KOUFETTA (CANDY COVERED ALMONDS) GRANULATED SUGAR. |
