	The ups and downs of California Geologists in California were surprised to discover that part of Los Angeles was �bouncing� up and down by between 10 and 11 centimetres each year. In addition to this annual cycle, the surface was sinking by 12 millimetres a year. Following the 1987 and 1994 earthquakes, scientists had established a network of 250 seismic stations in the Los Angeles basin. Position data from some of these stations showed unexpected movements. Confirmation of this phenomenon was given when the scientists, lead by Gerald Bawden of the US Geological Survey, compared the findings to satellite-based radar profiles. A 20 x 40 km region was indeed moving up and down. The cause was quickly identified. The annual motion was being caused by the city water authorities pumping and storing water in the underground aquifers during the rainy season in preparation for the dry summer. The continual pumping in and out of water was also compacting the sediment, which caused the sinking effect.
