Are your beauty products safe?

1. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a suspected liver or gastrointestinal toxicant and sometimes causes eye
and skin irritation, hair loss, and allergic reactions.
Read more about this hidden irritant.

2. When sodium lauryl sulfate is combined with TEA, DEA, or MEA, it can cause the formation
of nitrosamines--which are
carcinogenic.
3.
Methylparaben is a commonly-used chemical in many products. But recent research has shown that, when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, it actually causes wrinkles and liver spots. Parabens have been found in breast cancer cells. They have also been deemed as an endocrine disruptor.

.phthalates--plasticizers found in numerous cosmetics and other products--have been shown to be
hormone disruptors that can cause birth defects and other harm.

Safety Concerns with Sunscreens
by Annie Berthold-Bond

Frequently used UVA and UVB sunscreens were tested by the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Zurch, Switzerland, for estrogenicity, and reported in "Environmental Health Perspectives," 28 February 2001.
This is of special concern when using on children.

Chemicals that are estrogenic can be considered endocrine disrupters, fooling the body into believing they were natural hormones, which can cause reproductive problems. The chemicals analyzed were 1. benzophenone-3 (Bp-3) 2. homosalate (HMS) 3. 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC) 4. octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) 5. octyl-dimethyl-PABA (OD-PABA)

Abiding by the Precautionary Principle, it makes sense to choose products free of these chemicals until more research has been completed into possible long-term effects in humans and wildlife.

Chemical-free and natural sunscreens use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They are physical barrier-type sunscreens and generally less irritating. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide protect against UVA and UVB rays. Green tea contains components that help to  protect against skin cancer.
