Canada win Deutschland Cup!

CALGARY, AB - Canada's National Men's Team has captured the 2002 Deutschland Cup with a perfect 3-0 record, after defeating Germany 2-0 on Sunday in Hannover, Germany, in front of 7180 fans at the Preussag Arena. Canada's entry for the Deutschland Cup was coached by Gary Green. Canada's victory marks the second time Canada has captured this event, having won for the first time in 2000. Canada finished third at last year's Deutschland Cup. Calgary Flames' prospect Micki Dupont (Calgary, AB) and former Canadian Olympian Todd Hlushko (Toronto, ON) scored for Canada which finished the event with a perfect 3-0 record. Ian Gordon (North Battleford, SK) registered the shutout, making 24 saves for the victory. Canada outshot Germany 29-24.

HANNOVER, Germany (CP) - Canada is one win away from capturing the Deutschland Cup international hockey tournament after a 3-1 win over the United States on Saturday. Former veteran NHLer Darryl Shannon scored the winner 6:05 into the second period while speedy winger Jonathan Sim, on loan from the Dallas Stars organization, capped the scoring at 14:44 of the second for Canada (2-0-0). "Jon Sim has just been a fireball for us," said Canadian head coach Gary Green, who has stepped out of the broadcast booth for this tournament. Defenceman Shawn Anderson, who plays for Nuremberg in Germany, opened the scoring 5:24 into the game before 7,759 fans. Chris Tancill tied it 1-1 for the U.S. with less than five minutes to go in the first period. Mathieu Chouinard, on loan from the Ottawa Senators, stopped 24 shots. "I was really happy with our third period. We really shut them down," Green said. "Chouinard played a solid game for us." Now comes the final test, beating host Germany (1-1-0) to win the Deutschland Cup, which the Canadians won in 2000. Germany beat winless Switzerland 5-2 earlier Saturday. "The guys know they'll have their work cut out for them with German fans solidly behind their team," Green said. "It's going to be a challenge. "It's important for us to get the lead because they'll just sit back and trap us." Counting exhibition wins over Switzerland and Germany earlier in the week, Green's team is 4-0 heading into Sunday. "We've played a real high-tempo game," Green said. "We've been going right at them - Canadian-style."

David Nemirovsky of Toronto, Lonny Bohonos of Winnipeg, Todd Hlushko of Toronto and Mike Kennedy of Vancouver scored for Canada. Dan Lambert of St-Boniface, Man., added two assists. Ian Gordon of North Battlford, Sask., earned the win in goal. Marcel Jenni replied for Switzerland. Canada meets the U.S. on Saturday and Germany on Sunday in the three-day tournament. Canada won the Deutschland Cup for the first time in 2000 and finished third in 2001.

COLOGNE, Germany (CP) - Andy Schneider scored with less than five minutes to go in the third period to lead Canada to a 4-3 win over Germany in an exhibition game Wednesday. The game is in preparation for the Deutschland Cup, which begins Friday in Hannover, Germany. Lonny Bohonos added a goal and an assist while Dan Lambert and Jonathan Sim also scored. Sim was named player of the game while Micki Dupont also had a strog showing. ``Steve Kariya was certainly a big hit over here,'' said head coach Gary Green. ``He can fly.'' The winning goalie was Mathieu Chouinard of the Binghamton Senators. David Sulkovsky, Andreas Morczinietz and Sven Felski scored for the Germans. Canada opens the Deutschland Cup on Friday against Switzerland. Green said he is relishing coaching again. ``I'm loving it. It's outstanding. It's fun to be behind the bench, Ipve got great assistant coaches.''

Canada's National Men's Team doubled Switzerland 4-2 on Tuesday in Bern, Switzerland. Team Canada, comprised of Canadians playing in Europe, responded to an earlier second period goal by former NHL-er Reto Van Arx, with two goals one minute apart in the final moments of the middle frame. Former NHL-er and National Junior Team alumnus Christian Dub� put Canada on the board at 18:48 and one minute later, former Canadian Olympian Jean-Yves Roy gave Canada their first lead. Switzerland tied the game on a goal by Claudio Micheli at the 4 minute park. A mere 22 seconds after the Swiss had evened the score, international hockey veteran Jan Alston staked Canada to a 3-2 lead. Dub� eliminated any doubt of the final outcome with his second of the evening at 16:07 of the third period. Ian Gordon earned the victory in net for Canada. The Swiss National Team included seven members of their 2002 Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team. A second roster will now join Head Coach Gary Green in Cologne, Germany for an exhibition game on November 6, 2002 vs. Germany and the Deutschland Cup which runs in Hannover from November 6-10, 2002

Kariya Selected For Canada's National Men's Team For The 2002 Deutschland Cup

Winnipeg, Manitoba - The Canadian Hockey Association announced that forward Steve Kariya has been loaned to Canada's National Men's Team for the 2002 Deutschland Cup by the Vancouver Canucks. The Deutschland Cup will be held in Hannover, Germany from November 8-10, 2002. Kariya will join the team during the second week of November and will miss the two Moose games against the Lowell Lock Monsters on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9. Canada's National Men's Team for international events such as the Deutschland Cup are comprised of Canadians either currently playing in Europe or in the AHL. Canada's roster for the 2002 Deutschland Cup boasts seven players on loan from NHL teams: Micki Dupont (Calgary), Michael Henrich (Edmonton), Steve Kariya (Vancouver), Maxime Ouellet (Washington), Travis Roche (Minnesota), Peter Sarno (Edmonton) and Jonathan Sim (Dallas). Canada's entry for the Deutschland Cup, coached by Gary Green, will take part in an exhibition game in Cologne on Nov. 6 against Germany and in the Deutschland Cup from November 8-10 in Hannover, Germany.
