Week 6 (April 3th to April 9th)
Tuesday April 5, Today is a stat holiday, so no work! It's Arbor Day, which apparently is a big deal here, at least a big enough deal that we don't have to go to work today. Last night we went out to Beer Palace to celebrate sleeping in today. (Most of the bars have really lame names-- Beer Palace, Beer Cabin, The Beatles, and so on). Today, it was really really hot outside-- we were all sweating with t-shirts on, and it's only the beginning of April. Daegu has a reputation for being the hottest city in Korea, and if today was any indication, I can only imagine what the summer is going to be like. Anyway, Evan wanted to go to a DVD bang, and see a Korean movie today, so in the late afternoon, four of us piled into a cab headed for downtown to go to a DVD bang. A DVD bang is a private room that you can view movies in, just for you and your friends. There's kind of a video store where you can select your movie, and then you go to your private room, where you can watch your own movie on a big screen. We originally wanted to watch a Korean movie with English subtitles, but the guy couldn't figure out how to work the subtitle function, so we ended up seeing a Western movie anyway. The rooms are really funny-- there's a big long day bed kind of thing made out of vinyl for easy cleaning-- makes you wonder what goes on in those rooms, but then again, since I spent two hours on that day bed, I'd rather not think about the details too much! After the movie, we went back to Jason's place and got a home cooked meal (cooked by Jason of course).
Wednesday April 6, Disaster at work! Today, one of our kids quit because the mother didn't like what one of the teachers wrote on his report card. The teacher who wrote the report card didn't even say anything terrible, just that the boy was a big distraction to his classmates, but apparently the mother is just so offended that she refuses to bring her son to our school. Apparently writing the truth on report cards is kind of a no-no (it's a good thing that I wasn't particularly honest on my report cards, otherwise, half the school would have quit by now!). I wonder if it ever occurred to the mother that perhaps blaming us, she should maybe check out her son's behaviour issues first? Of course the timing of this incident is particularly bad, as Sue just had her baby and is maternity leave for the rest of the month (apparently that's all the time she needs before coming back to work-- talk about hard-core!). Personally, I think everyone is overreacting, but that seems to be the norm here!
Friday April 8, I got my very first cooking lesson today. Jason taught me how to make mac and cheese and meatballs. I realize that seeing as I'm a university graduate that it might be a little unbelievable that I've never made mac and cheese, but to be perfectly honest I never had. Not because I was incapable of doing it, cause I'm sure that even someone who's as hopeless at cooking as I am can follow the directions on the side of the box; I just for some reason never made Kraft dinner. So . . . I've mastered my first meal, and picked up some pretty good tips to boot. (Since Friday, I have practised my frying skills, and if I do say so myself, I did very well). I suppose that there's hope for my lacklustre domestic skills after all.
