Week 51 (Feb 12th to Feb 18th)
Sunday Feb 12th, Carey's wedding day! The set-up was similar to Ally's wedding; an open hall with kind of a stage and a podium, all decorated nicely (if not a little overdone!) Sylvia looked beautiful in this big long, long white dress. There was a specific employee of the wedding hall who was designated to adjust Sylvia's dress every time she had to turn or walk! I was "hired" to sing a few songs, and to play the Wedding March and what not. I was kind of nervous about it, because the ceremony was all in Korean, and I was worried that I wouldn't know when to play! Fortunately there seemed to be a wedding hall employee designated specifically to me! Carey and Sylvia were so happy about my song choice (The Nearness of You, a jazz standard), that I brought them both to tears, so I guess I fulfilled my job description. One part I'm bitter about: I wanted to see trumpet guns that shoot streamers (I'd heard that they "make appearances" at weddings, and I was disappointed when Ally's wedding didn't have any). Carey made sure that this wedding hall had trumpet guns, and I missed it because I was playing the Wedding March! I'm bitter . . .
Tuesday Feb 14th, I've started to give my apartment a thorough cleaning and sorting. What I've discovered: I have way too much stuff. I can't believe that I acquired so much over one year. But between my mom's almost bi-weekly boxes and my little shopping problem . . . Anyway, now I have to figure out how to move all of this stuff to Seoul. Today is Valentines Day. In Korea, the girls give the boys presents on Feb. 14th, and on Mar. 14th, they have White Day. This is the day when the boys give the girls presents.
Saturday Feb 18th, Presentation day. First off, I find it incredibly frustrating that we worked a 12 hour day for no money (we only get paid per class, since this wasn't actually class time, we get no compensation). This is especially irritating because Sue basically worked the foreign teachers into the ground today. I was adjusting the mics, keeping the kids in their lines and quiet, doing the props, and helping the younger kids with their lines. This meant that I was running around like crazy all day. I felt pretty bad for the kids too. They're six years old, and they're supposed to have the focus and the energy to do this all day? Yeah right. They weren't even allowed bathroom breaks. I don't understand why these things have to be so elaborate. The teachers made all the props, and whatnot, and they had to be perfect. The costumes were all ordered for EVERYTHING, and cost about $80 a piece. There was some gaudy balloon castle display in the back. We rented out a huge theatre. My kids did surprisingly well, considering all the pressure that was being placed on them. But I was angry at the way Sue treated her staff today. Then after the presentation, she just expected that all of us would go out to dinner. She hadn't mentioned this before, and Ryan and Lindsey and I had already made plans, so she gave us some attitude about that too. Our plans for the night: an apartment crawl in Chilgok! Since there's now 6 foreigners living close together, we figured we'd go to everyone's apartment in one night, and make an "around-the-world" theme. Every apartment had to be a different country, and thus serve appropriate alcohol and atmosphere. I was Jamaica, of course, with rum. Ryan and Lindsey did Italy, and had an Olympics theme. Ang did Spain, and Carey and Sylvia did America. Some of Ryan and Lindsey's friends came up from Ulsan. It was a good time! We needed to celebrate our god-awful presentation being over and done with, and that we certainly did!
