Week 37 (Nov 6th to Nov 12th)
Tuesday Nov 8th, The funk band is expanding-- several weeks ago at one of our shows, a girl named Susan expressed an interest in singing back-ups with the band. We were kind of hesitant at first, cause none of us had ever heard her sing, but she came out tonight to try a rehearsal with us, and it's going to work out great. Even better is that she doesn't seem to have any of the diva attitude that singers are so notorious for, so we're having a pretty easy time getting along. I'm still with cold, and feeling miserable. I can't wait to beat this thing.
Wednesday Nov 9th, Tonight the funk band had a second rehearsal at a new club in town called (seriously) The Pussycat. Honestly, who comes up with these awful names? It's only made better by the sign hanging over the stage that reads "Pussy" in neon letters. I think it should be a rule that Koreans who want to name their businesses in English should have to consult a foreigner first (a reputable one at that, I mean Pussycat, really?) Anyway, it's a really cool club, very big, very high ceilings, a kind of "balcony" level. We will be playing a gig here on the 19th, at a big party that will feature a lot of local and foreign DJs as well. Since the gig is the day after my birthday, it's also going to double as my bonafide birthday party!
Friday Nov 11th, This was Evan and Jason's last full week of work at Wonderland. By Thursday of next week, they'll both be out of here. Since Evan's parents are coming to Daegu tomorrow (they've been in Seoul since Wednesday), this is our last real party night together. Jason will be around for my birthday, but Evan is going traveling with his parents, and will be gone as of Thursday night. I can't believe that I'm losing my two best friends at the same time! These boys have taken care of me so much since I got here, and I don't think I would have nearly as much fun without them around. I'm nervous about the new people. I don't know anything about them, except that they might be friends of Evan's friend Sean. Plus, Sue screwed up in the visa process, and the new teachers won't get here until next weekend, thus leaving NO time to train or shadow other teachers. Because of Sue's mistake, Carey and I are also going to have a hell of a couple days trying to cover two people's schedules. Anyway, to celebrate our last real party night, we did it up vintage style: meeting up at Mike's place to start, and then downtown to Communes, and finishing up at Itaewon. Usually, a night like this would include dancing as well, but you might say that the Wonderland crew hit its peak a little too early this time! All I can say is that the details from the night are kind of fuzzy around the edges for all three of us.
Saturday Nov 12th, A lot of the kids are pretty upset that Jason and Evan are leaving, especially the Dolphin and Whale classes (both seven years old). So the mommies got to talking and asked Sue if there was any way that Jason and Evan could have a play date with some of the kids before they left town. Not paid time, or learning time, just fun time. Somehow I got roped into this play date too, although I'm not exactly sure why. It's not like I'm going anywhere . . . and why didn't Carey have to go too? So we agreed to go with the kids and the mommies to Woobang Tower Land, an amusement park in Daegu, for Saturday afternoon. All three of us violently hungover, we met at the school at 11am, and the mommies drove us to Woobang Tower Land, where we got to chase the kids around for the whole afternoon. I'm being kind of sarcastic right now, but it was actually a ton of fun. I loved seeing the kids in a non-school environment. They were hilarious and fun, and they were actually speaking really good English, which absolutely thrilled me-- obviously we're doing something right as teachers! Plus, the kids were just so thrilled to have us there, and the parents were over the moon that we took our own time to come see the kids, so everyone was happy. Korean moms really love doting on kids and others alike, so they were really taking care of us: buying our tickets, buying lunch and snacks and drinks, taking us to the top of the tower (it was actually a really clear day, so the view was beautiful), taking tons of pictures, driving us there and back, etc. We were only supposed to stay until 2pm (Evan had to meet his parents at the train station at 2:30pm), but Jason and I ended up staying until 6pm. Who would have thought that I'd end up being a kids person after all?
