Week 31 (Sept 25th to Oct 1st)
Wednesday Sept 28th, It's going to be another one of those weeks. Every night of the week has already been booked up, and I'm rapidly developing another cold, once again. Tonight the funk band had a gig at the only jazz club in town, called THAT. It's a really nice place, kind of like a cozy wine cellar atmosphere (and it has a real piano, which is a nice change for Daegu). My throat was hurting a lot, and I was exhausted, but we managed to have a pretty good gig anyway. As always, the response was huge. There is just such a demand for different types of music here; so far everyone has been eating the band up!
Thursday Sept 29th, Jason has booked Drums Is No to record on Sunday. I'm not entirely thrilled about it, because I'm tired and not feeling well already, but also because I don't think that we're good enough to record. Jason is being quite the idealist about it, and seems to think that we'll be able to record 80 minutes of music. What he hasn't realized yet is that it takes about an hour to record a decent 5 minute song! Evan has already bailed on us, so it's just going to be Mike, Jason and I. But Mike bailed on practising tonight, so Jason and I were left to stragetize our recording time. (It's very important to go in knowing exactly what you intend to do). So we spent the whole evening planning our session. I managed to talk him down to 7 songs, but I'm not sure we'll even get that done in one session!
Friday Sept 30th, I'm feeling even worse now. My cold has hit full-throttle, and I'm a little nervous because tomorrow night I have a gig and then on Sunday, I have the recording. All I can do is take my Korean drugs (which are unbelievably strong anyway) and hope for the best).
Saturday Oct 1st, I intentionally made no plans for the whole day, so I stayed in bed all day, drugged out of my mind on Korean medicine, and hoped that some miracle would happen and make me better before the gig! It didn't happen, but I did manage to pull together a passable, if a little nasal voice. The gig was with the funk band, at Communes, and I have never seen so many people there in my entire time here (and on a long weekend too!). It was absolutely packed. Because we were sharing the bill with another band, we didn't start until 1am, but once we started, it went over like gold! Everybody was dancing the whole night, and we didn't stop until 3am. With the noise of the band and the crowd, you couldn't really hear much definition to my voice anyway, so I got away with being sick. It was a really high energy set! I was kind of worried for awhile, because people kept on buying shots for the band, which I had to drink because everyone was watching. And we all know what happened last time I had a couple of drinks while taking Korean medication . . . I managed to hold myself together this time anyhow!
